The minimum wage for 16-17 year olds is £3.30 per hour. On October 2007 this will increase to £3.40. No employer is allowed to set an hourly rate that is not within the National Minimum Wage. You'd have to check

I really don't know why this has been a policy of employers to employ young people and pay them such low hourly rate. It would be much better to start something on your own and earn as per your hard work.

Yeah it is. If you worked 40 hours a week at £3.30 you'd get a gross pay £528 per month and that isn't a lot indeed.
