As a bit of an idiot when it comes to that sort of thing etc, I have installed phpBB3 on one of my domains and it could'nt have been easier.
I had a small problem which was quickly sorted in this forum.
My advice is download a copy from the phpBB web site hosting and give it a go for yourself, there are plenty here who will help if you have any hassle.
If I'm honest [as someone who is used to phpBB2] I find the new permissions system of phpBB3 completely baffling and harder to work out than the actual install !
Go on, give it a go, what have you got to lose ?!

PS. If you want to have a go at the admin of version 3 PM me and I'll let you have a play on my phpBB3 web site hosting which is only for test purposes so does'nt matter what you do to it.
