You can do, they both do the same thing. But as you say Google may find it easier with a 301 redirect.
Watch yourself with this though as when it decides to mess up it can send your
website hosting crazy and into an infinite loop of redirects. Don't ask me why, but mine started doing this after it hard worked fine for ages!
