Hi Rock, Scott and anybody else trying to find a solution to this FTP layer problem.

247h has been kind enough to offer space on his dedicated server to test install Joomla 1.5.3, The install went smoothly with no problems, FTP layer connected during install and all features seem to be working OK. I have installed several components and modules and uploaded and installed admin and web site hosting templates, all without a problem. The server meets the recommended requirements for Joomla 1.5.3 except register globals is ON and the recommended setting is OFF, this does not affect the usability of Joomla 1.5.3 I believe it is a security thing.

After checking file permissions and ownership on the install on 247h’s server and comparing to my VPS Hosting settings, I noticed one difference, public_html on 247h’s server are, owner: account name. Group: nobody. On my VPS Hosting public_html has, owner: account name. Group: account name, I changed my VPS Hosting to the same settings as 247h’s server, and suprise suprise the FTP layer connected during install, at this point I thought I had found the solution, but sadly not, Joomla 1.5.3 has installed and on the face of it looks to be working OK. The problems show when you try to install components and modules etc, some install OK and work, some will not install, some install and will not work fully.
I will list a few examples: admin and web site hosting templates install and work OK, Gallery component Image Browser installs OK uploads pictures OK, but cannot create thumbnails, Extplorer file manager will not install at all, it reports: JFTP::store:Bad response. Warning!-Failed to move file. These problems seem to me to be permission problems, that is what the FTP layer is supposed to overcome, and does on 247h’s server.
If System Administrator requires URls, usernames and passwords I can PM them. As long as 247h leaves the web site hosting on his server active.
