Update, Also read on some other forums about changing the DNS values to OPENDNS,

Do a google for opendns with VM, or look on the cable forums website hosting
It's not a DNS issue as when these outages occur, it is not possible to access the services via IP either. MTU 1492 is designed for PPPoE broadband - which Virgin Media is not based on.
