My Firefox has taken up to 512MB sometimes and up to 50% of the CPUs which has caused a big slowdown. Apaprently part of this is due to memory leaks and people like me who like to keep cache, download history for a reasonable amount of time it also doesn't like that.

Cleared them both yesterday and firefox now seems to be behaving again. Apparently Mozilla are focusing on trying to eliminate the memory "leaks" from Firefox .
