thomaskramer: It really depends what you want it for and what your exact requirements are. As Rock's post explains VPS can be used for specific purposes but it pretty much feels like a physical server. It is likely to be more restrictive in terms of available hardware resource and due to its nature/technology can be potentially less secure than a dedicated server, but it is a great gap filler between shared hosting and dedicated server. I switched from shared hosting to VPS around 5 months ago and have never looked back. There were some teething issues while I got the configuration right (this would apply to any server, though), but now the server is very stable and I have not had any real issues with it. And if I do have some issues, VPS support guys are normally very quick with pointing me in the right direction.
