Due to a problem with lost cron table entries (which will be the subject of a separate post) I was advised in a chat that eUKhost's weekly backup is on a Sunday. There is also a monthly backup every 15th and 30th of the month.
Seems reasonable enough, except that previous backups are overwritten

The 15th of November was a Sunday so a problem which occurs on the 14th is backed up twice on the 15th and, if discovered two days later on the 16th, cannot be resolved as there is no backup.
I hate to think what would have happened if the recent Turkish hack on the Sheffield server had happened on the 15th - I hope that the backups would have been stopped but, in the pressure that the support staff were obviously under.....
I take regular backups of my sql databases and website but not my email and crontab entries etc
Time to subscribe to eUKhost's Offsite Backup I think - I don't have any problems with paying for it (I think eUKhost is great value for money) but am glad I didn't have something really drastic to identify the limitations of eUKhost's own backup strategy.
