Hello All,
Suggestion for Desktop PCs:

Disk space is ample these days. So
a) Get a Disk Cloning software (eg. symantec ghost, Acronis Partition) of your choice. I have found all of them to be equally good

b) Keep all your installed software on one drive and Data on another, software copies on third.
c) When the system is clean an OK, Create a copy of the main (installed software) partition and keep it as a file on another partition or Burn it to a CD/DVD.

d) Frequently, say once in a few months (this time depends on your average MTBF - mean time between failure), update/recreate the partition image file.

e) If something goes wrong, just re-install from the partition image/ghost/clone. Takes about 30 minutes for a 20GB disk. Again, time depends on hardware and cpu speed.

This is a good way to allow kids to do whatever they want. JUst rememeber to backup your data after a few days as well so that in case of an attack/infection, you don't lose the data itself.
