Have you ever had a conversation on MSN and discovered that every other word is lol? Or that when you have nothing to say in response you feel obliged to put an obligatory "lol" in place so that the other person still knows your there.
Me and a few friends were having a conversation about it yesterday and were wondering whether "lol" should be banned or restricted in the amount of times it could be used in conversation.
What is everyones view on this? And of course, there is only one proper way to end this post - lol ;)
Yes, I use lol too much, it's kind of addictive isn't it? Like if someone said to me 'Hmm, my PHP game works now' - out of no where I'd say 'lol' - I probably say lol at least 5 times per minute or so in a conversation sometimes :(. Lol, I was about to make a discussion about this somewhere as well ha lol... oh god! :(

lol. there won't be any fun left in chats if you ban lol. I use lol even while talking to someone.
Please don't get rid of LOL. I named my website hosting (http://www.eukhost.com/) after it.

The scary thing is so have I recently - at least it used to be confined to instant messaging.

lol.
It makes me laugh (lol!) sometimes though reading back through MSN conversations and "lol" is used in response to something that is not even remotely funny such as "My tea is ready" "lol OK".
Have you ever "lol'ed" at an inappropriate time? - such as "My cat has just died" "lol" ;).
Lol carry social & behavioral signal of pleasant mood, http://www.eukhost.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif I don't think it is overused. http://www.eukhost.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

I thought this Uncyclopedia article was quite quaint, see for yourself
Are you a student DPS ? Because taht sounds very much like a conversation students have. Kind of like the discussion we had at the pub for hours about "where does time go"

Haha! - Yeah, exactly, you say lol inappropriately and you say to yourself "where the hell did that come from? lol"

I am (among my other talents as a club DJ and in security!). I do know what you mean Brian, us students do tend to come up with the most thought provoking under discussed topics in the world ;). lol
Well, it can be used also for "lot of luck", "lot of love" but people mostly take it for laugh out loudly.. lol http://www.eukhost.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

So this brings us on to another topic - "How do you know what lol the other person intended?".
Used to do Club / Bar / Stadium security meself, hated working in the student bars though :P

That's easy.
Nobody ever means "laugh out loud" nowadays. How often do you literally do that when you type it? lol
I don't think anyone who uses "lol" is necessarily laughing on the other side. Most of them just have a difficult time coming up with anything good to say, so they put the first thing that pops in their head - lol
Maybe we should all try and go a week without using lol on this forum?

See, your trying to resist the temptation of using "lol" now by replacing it with "haha" - you won't be able to keep it up for long! Its only a matter of time before you let a lol slip out! - lol ;) .
I'm not sure slipping your lol's out in such a public place as this is really appropriate, DPS - lol.

Has it become a taboo subject? lol ;)
Thought I would give this thread another breath again...
You know, sometimes I think lol in my head (without saying it obviously in my head ) in real life if someone said something amusing. If lol becomes too excessive Mark will need to implement filters that replace lol with something else ;).
Lmao! Well it would be interesting to see what he could do. Maybe something like "OMG - that's like sooooo funny!!!" Just as short and sweet as lol. ;-)

lol. I have actually let a lol or 2 slip out in real life, especially after a few drinks so its usage is becoming quite a scary reality in normal conversation as well!

But if its automated that point is moot ;).
LOL! :D
OK, lol can never become overused, but I am afraid there will be a point in time, when two people meeting on the bus will start using "lol" while talking to each other, and that too with a straight-face (like we usually do on the net!)
Over-hearing that communication will be hilarious! LOL :D and more LOL ;)

Yes, i have to agree, I can't wait for that situation - I'm already half way there with nearly saying lol in normal conversation!
One day I think lol will actually replace the need to laugh, so therefore rather than laughing we start loling LOL ;)
