Desktops are far more powerful than laptops and don't die after two years :P Laptops are fairly pointless unless to need to be mobile, they're useful for small stuff though but generally you'll find everything is on-board, and that the hardware needs replacing after two years.

All my laptops have lasted more than 2 years!!!

And on board stuff only comes on the cheap laptops - its the same for desktops also. My last laptop had 512MB Nvidia graphics card 3 gb RAM, 2.5 Ghz Dual Core Intel Pentium 4 processor and many other nice bits to make it the ultimate gaming machine!!

2 years is what you'll get for frequent use. But most laptop hardware is more likely to die quicker.

Yes, my very old laptop is more than 2 years old and generally depending on how you use your laptop your battery life lasts for around 2 years. That is generally the first bit of hardware that will "die" after 2 years.

I do agree that desktop hardware will last much longer than laptop hardware but my teacher has a Windows 95/98 laptop, which certainly will be years old - and she hasn't needed one replacement of hardware at all.

I think you're referring to when you drop it down the stairs? :biggrin:

The joy of John Lewis is the standard warrenty is 2 years (providing it isn't a down the stairs or have a water fight situation!). My first laptop, 2 months before the warrenty ran out, the hard drive died and I couldn't get in to a store to send it off for repair. So for a month I ran Ubuntu live with my RAM and a 2GB memory stick. It was very effective for what I needed (if not a bit sluggish) but it meant by the time I took the laptop in, the hard drive was dead and the RAM and DVD drive were on the way out so they replaced them all. Laptop was working fine until some muppet banged it getting off a train but the insurance covered that!

My laptops are on 24/7 - if you look after your hardware theres no reason it should fail after two years.

And my laptop is never idle - apart from running the folding@home program constantly it also runs another research project for MIT, has AVG scans for 1 hour 30 mins at 3am, spybot, adaware and vista manager also do various scans and clean ups through the day and I'm also normally glued to it as well as using it to run software for my work which requires excessive amounts of the CPU, RAM and fast transfer rate from HDD to RAM.

If you buy a cheap laptop or misuse it then yes, 2 years is about its lifetime!
