Just in case we all die tommorow its been nice knowing you all!!! :fire:
hahaha. This is hilarious!!! I thought you were really leaving the forum for sometime 'n all
I only heard about this LHC since the BBC news about 10ish. Not sure if anyone would read this thread before 6am which I believe is the start of all this crazy experiment.
At least if we die we'll become part of matter
I got a nice bottle of Merlot that will go down good just before I get sucked into a black hole :|

hehe, no don't want to intentionally leave the forum, if this does come true then the forum wouldn't exist and we would have all technically left lol ;).
Not sure on the time, but if it is 6am, then Judegement Day could be close.
Hopefully I will still see you all to post here tommorow night. If not, I'll see you on the big cloud in the sky ;).
So I guess the Internet will be ending shorter than expected?

Yep - at least we can live safe in the knowledge that we spent some of our last hours on the lovely eUKhost forum.
No more global warming to worry about!!

Nope, and no more politicians, WMD or wars in Iraq and George Bushes to worry about either.
But we'll all always remember that :eukrocks: and I'm sure will be the number 1 hosting company in heaven! Will have to relocate the Maidenhead datacentre to "Cloud base 1" though unfortunately - hope another datacentre move doesn't affect you too much Mark (or should I say the spirit of Mark! ;))
Nothing will happen, Guaranteed. This is a small chance, there is a higher chance when they actually fulfill the experiment in October, this is basically a test ensuring they go the correct way, if they don't the atoms will be dispensed immediately, nothing will blow up :D

It would be greatest day to watch the big bang happening and seeing everything going inside the black hole before our eyes. :)

Its easy to say that after the experiment had already started!!!! lol
I hope backups are in place
So do I!!! Or a self destruct mechanism!

Haha!!
Don't worry, its only took us 10,000 years of evolution to destroy our planet, maybe other planets won't be too welcoming to our arrival when they hear the news
Oh wait, even Google are anticipating:

The irony in that comment - the internet was born at CERN when the previous experiment there was in operation.
It's quite funny actually as today nothing has actually been colliding. All they've been doing is passing particles around the complete ring to check everything is working... It's nothing that exciting - it's the equivalent of road testing a car before you do the safety test. Today was seeing if the car will drive - when we get to crashing the car into things, that is when the fun will really start and then we might get a black hole!
And frankly (being a physicist I actually do know what I'm talking about here) there is more chance of an asteroid hitting the Earth than a black hole appearing - just think, you're far likely to die in a car crash than anything CERN creating a black hole which will devour the earth.
Hypothetically, if you were to get pulled into a black hole, it would be quite interesting as your feet would get pulled into the hole faster than your head so your body would just get stretched. So there is still hope for all the short people out there!

Yay! Considering I'm only 5ft 6 :P
I like how they talk about many countries going into recession and there they are pumping billions to a project tbh isn't needed at all.
People said things like that last time CERN was looking for funding. And you got the internet out of that!

The economy wasn't as bad is it is now back then.
No, but CERN was mainly paid for before completion i.e. when the economy was strong.

I still think its a worthless investment, although I may take that back if they find something useful i.e. how humans can fly.

It's called an aeroplane...
And the point in these things isn't just the physics. To be able to conduct this kind of experiment, new technology has to be developed. CERN is basically using the next generation of the internet and computing as the processing power needed for this kind of thing is huge. Mind, that is nothing compared to the SKA which is being developed. The data rates the telescope with require don't even exist yet - and currently there is no way to record data at the speeds required.
So, from what you're saying we shouldn't invest in that now even though it is going to lead to faster computers, faster data storage and access and faster networking speeds?

lol. You aren't very optimistic Josh ;). This is a very important experiment although it may seem pointless finding out facts of our own curiosity it will help open new doors. The universe is one big loop, one thing creates another - translation: Hydrogen and Oxygen makes Water ;)
I just want to point out these specifications for the SKA:
2000 inner antenna - each connected at 80 Gbps
150 outter antenna - each connected at 2 Tbps
All of this data needs to be processed and analysed and then distributed to scientists. Do you really think that is possible with today's technology?

Well according to the scientists doing the experiment anythings possible ;).
Well were all still here

Yep, this is why we shouldn't mess with things that blow up - and release things colder than deep space.
What were we saying about it being funded while the economy is strong? No doubt they'll need a few million (at least) to get this back on track and to last 6 more months longer than expected and there expecting all this money while the economy is in tatters!

IMO it should be adandoned and be marked down in history as a stupid mistake. As they say, its better to be safe than sorry and since they're going to need millions to repair it, it should be abandoned.
I think my opinion of it being a waste of money and just another excuse to find out a load of stuff we don't already know and don't need to know is echoed by many.

Like I have said before when scientists know this, it unlocks new doors. Like I said, knowing Hydrogen and Oxygen make Water and water is the new thing ("new knowledge").
It's hardly dangerous at all, you're just getting ideas from biased critics that are too superstitious. Consider the evidence before theory.

Goodbye DPS. Good luck.

Right - scientific viewpoint - For your information, the day the media hyped up about the world ending, sod all happened because all they did was pass particles around the LHC. When they actually start colliding them we may get a black hole etc. etc. but how much news coverage do you think there is going to be then?
And issues were expected so this isn't so much of a big deal. The main problem is that they have to cool everything down again which takes a long time.
When testing the system, they missed out a load of frankly pointless tests so they are actually ahead of their final finish schedule - and have done it at a lower cost that it would have done with all the testing. So yet again, I think you'll find that the money is already there.
Finally, for those of you who think it's a load of rubbish, try living without the internet for the rest of your life - that is the legacy of particle physics and experiments like this - and if you think the internet is a waste of money I think you'll have a hell of a lot of other people tell you different.
Apparently it was first said to have been halted because the temperature was 20dc more than it should have been.
Apparently it was first said to have been halted because the temperature was 20dc more than it should have been.
That was caused by a Liquid Helium leak.
Case of Man Playing God!
They should better read the Holy Bible and learn how the Universe was formed... and learn how and why God gave up His only Son so that world would become a better place for all...
IMHO, there is a huge hole that these scientists should first try to close -- the Ozone layer hole, before trying to see, just for a nano-second, how the Universe was formed! It's simple... begin with experimenting on new refrigeration and air-conditioning technology that does not produce Ozone depleting gases. That's the number one thing that they should experiment, and come out with solutions to save the World, before trying to create the Universe in a tube...
Then, stop hurting the Earth by stopping unwanted nuclear testing... and begin purification of air and water, and produce more and better food... and stop all wars... and make this World a better place for the coming generations...
This experiment hadn't taken in to consideration the heat that would be generated -- or any such "accidents" that has now caused the intermission in this "Collider" project -- during the course of the initial stages, and now the project is closed for 2 months! Will they, or anyone else, be really able to manage the immense heat that will be generated when the sub-nuclear particles actually collide at hyper-speed, even if they somehow manage to stay up with this experiment 'till that long? I doubt...
Hope, they have learnt a lesson in humility and humanity... there is a lot to do and achieve, and they can now concentrate on doing better things for mankind... I would love to see them playing God on other better issues...
P.S.:
With the US economy, and with that, the rest of the world now facing a huge, all-time-high -- never-seen-before financial crisis, and with a promise of more plunging to follow, who is going to foot the huge bills to keep this experiment going? Europe...?
P.S. (II):
I think, the Black Hole would be a far better place to "live" than the present-day blackened-by-the-smog world! An Eternal Life for all till eternity!
Hope, there is still light in the "Collider" tunnel... if not, then in few moments we might just witness the formation of the Universe-II in the Tube! Someone playing God there just need to say: "Let there be Light!"
Quote:
And then God said, "Let There Be Light!"... and a little later, the Universe was formed! :)

Also those taking initiative to combat global warming must take population growth into account which is also one of the reason of such threat, Government should launch voluntary family planning campaign because the pace the human population is growing, you can imagine how badly the human population will impact to earth environment in next fifty years. :frown:
And I think you'll find that is not the job of a physicist - those are the jobs of engineers to come up with solutions to those things. If you want everyone to stop and concentrate on one thing, the world would grind to a halt. It's like saying every skilled person should be a plumber to fix all the water issues. But then what happens when there is an electrics fault - we have no one to fix it.
If you were educated on the science of this topic then you would realise the temperatures involved are not high at all - Imperial College in London runs Plasma experiments at far higher temperatures on a daily basis. The energies involved are also much less that cosmic rays hitting the Earth every single second - oh look and we're still here! So maybe before you start being sceptical about the people doing these experiments remember they are the experts in their fields and know what they are doing.
And this: God said: ∇•E=ρ/εo, ∇•B=0, ∇xE=- ∂B/∂t, ∇xB=μoJ+μoεo∂E/∂t "Let there be light"
is a physics joke coming from Maxwells Equations which predict the existence of light.
Just to point out, if God created the world as the bible says about 6000 years ago, how come that the world is millions of years old and has gone through evolution and all that stuff?
And I think you'll find that is not the job of a physicist - those are the jobs of engineers to come up with solutions to those things. If you want everyone to stop and concentrate on one thing, the world would grind to a halt. It's like saying every skilled person should be a plumber to fix all the water issues. With all my due respect to you, Sir! ...
Admitted / Agreed! But, my views are also purely speculations -- mere theory; view; notion; as per dictionary!
And I don't think that the makers and planners, including the super physicists at the LHC project, shouldn't work on "basic" solutions on creating better air-conditioning or refrigeration engines, and now also adding to my growing wish-list, better car engines and their exhaust pipes too :)-- haven't they (with help of others, of course) planned the LHC's super-cooled magnets, and ... please read this quote:
Quote: "One of the LHC's eight sectors will now have to be warmed up to well above its operating temperature of 1.9 kelvin (-271C; -456F) – which is colder than deep space – so that repairs can take place. " (unquote)

I admit that these Scientists/Physicists shouldn't start repairing pipes... but, aren't they doing just that on a much more scientific plane at the LHC? It does mean that they are super engineers who just as easily understand the principles of "piping engineering science" and apply it to the super LHC, and while doing that, of course, taking the piping science to its greatest peak of efficiency! It's those respectful super brains and others like them that I humbly call upon to also kindly look in to the other important issues threatening mankind... as mentioned above in another post...
To fix a hole certainly call the capable plumber or engineer, but to fix a much greater hole in the atmosphere call upon those greatly respected "plumbers", (not degrading them in any way, of course, but, aren't they plugging the liquid helium leakage at the LHC project right now?), who are capable of producing the "plugs", and also creating more efficient tools that will strongly hold the 27-km long "pipe" together and help the project to be a grand success. That little plumbing exercise will now also restart this greatest experiment, the LHC project.
While working on this project, and also the fact that many such super scientists have gathered at one location, and that they might just have a little spare-time to really spare, they can also start a small brain-storming session on "plugging" that huge hole up there! Of course, these are my very humble speculations with myself!
I might have requested them in person to just give these "feelings" a kind thought if I was somebody very special... Okay, dear friends, I really agree that I am not! :)
Seriously, I very respectfully say that those kind of super scientists (call them super Physicists in a focused way) can really bring about the changes in the atmosphere. If they can construct the Universe and try to find the most elusive particle -- the dark matter, the existence of multi-dimensions, create multiple nano/micro black holes, and the finding of the most elusive particle -- Higgs boson particle, they can, of course, surely work brilliantly on those other important "issues" mentioned earlier ...

... the best hope for LHC technology helping us with the energy crisis is that the cooling systems developed for LHC are now being transferred to the ITER fusion project in France.
And fusion certainly would be the answer to our energy problems if we can make it work on an industrial scale, which is the goal of ITER by around 2035. (BC) ...

I like the above statement more particularly!
As per the references to "God" the mega-super-Physicist, I only turn upon HIM because in my very humble opinion, I wish HIM to intervene and make our world a better place to live... for everybody... Well, I also don't think that it will be a down-sized "plumbing" job for that TOP LEVEL "Scientist" - God, to really plug all those holes that we humans have created in little less than a century!
Those are my views or speculations... and if one particular world-renowned super scientist who also is a great human being -- a very respected and a very dear person whom I really admire -- can fearlessly "speculate", (love him more for that!), then surely a much lesser mortal like me should be pardoned for speculating too, which, incidentally, is not very much out of context, or away from the truth? :)...

Just only wishing for a really good place for all... nothing more serious than this, Sir!
Agreed that the heat (or whatever!) was not too great, but it DID CROSSED CRITICAL LIMITS, and brought this greatest project to a grinding and serious halt. Count this as a factor of critical limits and not merely energy units. My gas-stove would have probably generated more heat, comparing equivalently, when it boils water and cooks food -- a difference of more than 100 degrees possibly from its coolest to its hottest! Not a very CRITICAL factor to us but it becomes critical if it burns or over-cooks the food though!
Of course, no one would have heard what God really said! But, I do believe God has said everything! A simple case of believing in a real "God" up there.
And, about the population explosion, well, that's really a huge point to ponder! Definitely a job for God alone to plug more serious holes and repair unmanageable pipes (honest, no "piping" pun intended) -- simply because the concerned people are just not doing anything potent about it!
I am really amused now that "piping" has become a core issue with this... but isn't the LHC project much about "Creating A Mini-Universe in A Mega-Pipe" really? A scientific marvel, indeed!
On second thought: Are we, I mean our existing Universe too, also a part of some "greater than the existing Universe itself" mega LHC-type project where some "God" has already created HIS own "little LHC" to produce this Universe? Are we too "poofing" off in HIS own nano-second? Not an Oxymoron thought definitely, when other better equipped are also searching for more expansive thruths! WOW! Must seriously go back to my beloved Bible more, and before "HIS nano-second" ends anytime, and try and become like HIS most beloved SON!
God Bless!
