Default Offsite Data Backup

We understand importance of backups and we have launched addon backup service for our customers.

We have started this additional Offsite Data Backup Service to allow our corporate customers to keep a daily backup of their mission critical data. I don't think anything would be as good as this for those who are running dynamic websites.

If you wish to maintain a separate backup space on a remote server where you can connect through FTP and we can setup rsync mirroring then you should consider our Offsite Data Backup Service.

We will setup daily, weekly & Monthly rsync crons to copy backup of your accounts on your backup space. This service would be addon service and backup service included in your hosting plan wont be compromised for promotion of this addon backup service.

Just to check I understand this - we don't need to do anything manual ourselves, we just order this and an automatic daily backup can be scheduled of everything relating to our site(s)?

Thats right.

You wont need to do anything from your end. We will setup crons which will make daily backups on your backup space. You will have ftp access to your backup space and that will allow you to verify if the backups are working daily or not.

Right now you don't have access to our backups and most of the times customers complain saying that the backup you have is not the recent one.

This additional backup space will allow you to connect through FTP and verify your data.

I have already clarified in my post that we wont compromise our weekly backups which are included in the hosting service to promote newly started backup service.

This service has been started for those who want daily backups and also access the backup for verification.

We always hear customers saying that they lost £1000 or £2000 or more due to loss of 1 weeks data so paying £12 per year to have daily backup should not be a big deal for such customers.

One should not expect eUKhost to keep 10 different backups for your account when you pay such low price for hosting. Only reason for giving top class service to our customers is to grow our business and earn more money through referral signups and upgrades. No other company would give 24x7 support in the form of Charity.

No offense.

This sounds like a great additional service - and good value. So I signed up straight away !

Now I would like to know how to use it please. I can't find any help in your knowledgebase or elsewhere just now - but perhaps I have missed something?

Thanks.

You haven't missed anything as your welcome email has not been sent till now.

This new backup server was setup day before yesterday and security settings as well as kernel upgrade with our custom kernel was implemented today.

Your welcome email would be sent shortly in which you will find FTP login details for your backup space. Our level 3 support will then send an email to you requesting your custom configuration for backup of your account / accounts.

Thanks, Indeed I received an email confirmation today with a new cpanel login - although having tried it nothing seems functional yet.

I shall eagerly await further information. No doubt you will publish some help information very soon.

Your backup was successfully completed last night and you can verify that from your backup account.

Most important thing to add over here is the new technology invented by our CRO for this backup service.

He isolated himself for last 3 days so we were not sure what was going on with him but today he came up with the solution which was very shocking as none of us ever imagined if that was possible.

He has written a perl script which will automate the complete backup procedure. Once you signup for the backup service your account is automatically created on the backup server and one of the staff member from support / billing department will just need to enter the username, domain name and IP address of the server where your account is hosted. Backup script will run every night at 3 AM and it will fetch backup of all accounts on the backup server from source servers. MySQL daily backup would be stored in directories with name Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and so on. One backup of home directory will get updated daily and one weekly backup will get updated every week.

On completion of backup users will receive one email mentioning that the backup was successfully completed. If anyday it fails for any reason then another email would be sent to customers with reason for failure. I hope you wont mind to receive one extra email per day. Security has been given utmost importance in this as the script will have access to copy files and folders from source servers but it wont have permission to SSH or delete any contents using rsync.

Can you please explain how I can do this? I can log in via the new cpanel, but non of the items seem to be functional.

I haven't received any emails yet - does that mean the service has not been started yet ?

In the original description of the product it said that set-up would be easy. Is there actually anything for me to set-up - or is it all automatic as described?

Regards.

All you need to do is use the FTP information which was sent for the backup account and verify if it is making daily backups of your latest data as well as databases.

I personally verified data in your account so daily backup is going well so far. I will ask our system admins to configure email notification for your account as soon as possible as that will send daily notifications to you once the backup is completed everyday.

If you're going to send a daily email about backup status, I recommend you put something very clear to identify it in the subject line that users can use in an Outlook rule to filter it into a folder.

OK - I can use the FTP login to check out the backup space. But I'm not really sure what is going on.

I can see there seem to be daily backup folders for mysql databases relating to my base account. But I don't seem to have any access into those folders to see what is there. (I get a 550 permission denied error)

I can also see that the home directory from my base account has a single backup. Does this not also get a daily backup?

However it is really all my other domain accounts that I am interested in. I can't see where they are stored at all?

Please advise.

Daily backup of home directory is configured to update daily while mysql databases will have 7 different backups for each weekday and one weekly backup taken on Saturday. Home directory would have 2 backups, 1 daily and other weekly.

If we make multiple backups of home directory then your backup space will get filled and quota errors will result in data loss.

If you have a reseller account then let me know the username and IP of your reseller account so that we can proceed to configure daily backups for all your resold accounts.

You wont be able to access to backup of mysql databases as the permission on those is of mysql user and it wont allow anyone else to check the data as of now. I have informed our CRO to look into this and he will come up with a solution for this.

This seems a reasonable approach. However because I have several domain accounts within my re-seller package the backup space is still likely to fill up relatively quickly.

What happens when the space is full - does the backup stop?
Do I get a warning email message in advance?
Is it a purely manual job for me to purge out old backups to release space?
What tools are available for me to check on disk space (I have already noted that the cpanel functions don't seem to work)?

My reseller domain is css3w.com. In the short term it will be best to back-up every account - but I think that you will need to consider a user interface so that I can select myself which accounts I really want to backup and preferably be able to set a desired backup frequency. (Not all data is critical or is modfied very frequently.) Your original advert and mailings did imply that there would be some user configuration possible.

Best regards.

Well it is now two weeks sinch you launched your new backup service, and at least a week since this thread went rather quiet - so I am hoping you have now worked out all the details of how it works!

I have opened a ticket to re-state my queries. I will be happy to write a public article to explain the mysteries once they have been revealed.

Best regards.

Hello Chris,

Backup was successfully configured for your account and it is making daily backup of your account as well as separate daily backups of your mysql databases.

We cannot disclose our backend technology behind this configuration as we don't want any other hosting company to implement what took 7 days for our CRO to work out.

I will reply to your ticket with specific details that you have requested.
