Default .com domain in UK searches ?

Hello all, for some time now I have had a .com domain but wish it to show up in UK searches etc, At the moment my website hosting is hosted in the USA, from reading many search engines like Google tend to go by country ip for the listing what are your views on this?
Also I am wondering if this host has the option for mod re-right etc?
thanks for any help

Hello Mrix,

What you have heard is right incase of .com domains. .co.uk domains are categorized as UK based in search engines but .com domains get categorized only if you host on UK based servers.

Our servers are based in UK ( London ) so you will see improvement in your rankings once you move your website hosting on our servers.

Also I have read that you should mention "UK" somewhere in your title tag as various engines then recognise your website hosting as UK content even though it may end in .com etc

That would benefit only if people search for some keyphrase that includes UK. As pper my knowledge actual rankings improve only if you the website hosting is hosted in UK.

It should not make much problem to add a extra 2 character word as many people search for different things by adding UK in their search keyphrase.

I only refer to some engines/directories would not let me submit my website hosting as UK was not detected in the title. Also play.com use it to the same effect. It can only be a good thing!

Yes, it is surprising that search engines are still relying on the host location to determine what they consider a related country (in the case of .com).

I have a hobby website hosting and I had to use a US based host for it as I knew the majority of people searching for the content for that website hosting would have been based in the USA. It was the primary reason for choosing US hosting - however, I have noticed there is a severe lack of quality UK hosting available that has any customer service.

This is why I am at eukhost now - just trying to decide which option to go for.

Anyway, I will have a .com and the equivalent .co.uk - registered both as I intend it to be a brand name in time and for that, the .com would be more or less essential to obtain even though the initial audience will be UK focussed. The .com is the domain name people still have most trust in and for branding purposes - if it is available then purchasing it would be the wisest thing possible (as if it built up any reputation, a domain squatter would quickly seize on the .com version).

Hi, how are you? What you have heard is right, basically .co.uk domains are always categorized as UK based in search engines whereas .com, .net and those are only categorized if you host on uk based servers! Besides, when you sign up with eukhost you will be satisfied and be alot happier since the servers are based in London UK you shoud be by far satisfied!

Best Regards

Younes

I think the point has been missed here with some posts regarding .com domains being categorised according to location!!

Don't forget ".com" does not mean the US. ".com" means "commercial". ".com" is not tied to any specific country so hence you will appear in the countries search of where the domain is hosted!!

The reason ".co.uk" results always appear under the UK country searchs is because the ".uk" means United Kingdom!! The US has its own country code ".us" as does every other country in the world!! A ".us" name would always appear is US searchs as another example!

Hope that clears it up for people!!

Yep, some people take degrees entirely about the way search engines work and spend a long time studying the successful ones such as Google.
