Wink Firewall Question

Hi,

I am very interested in your web hosting cPanel service but would like to ask a technical question.

My project is implementing a java game where 2 players will be connected to each other.

My feeling is that Web services will be too slow so I am thinking either using Java RMI or pure sockets ?

If I get a hosting account would your engineers be able to open a particular port on the firewall for such traffic ?

Many Thanks,
Rich.

Hello Rich,

We keep standard ports open on our shared hosting servers but you will need to consider a VPS / Dedicated Server to open any additional ports. VPS comes with root login and it is fully owned by you so we wont have any problem if you open any ports on your VPS.

All our VPS and Dedicated Server plans are fully managed so you wont need to get into complications of managing your server.

Like you said Rich, application such as that will probably be using a lot of resources so you would need a plan like a VPS / Dedicated server anyway.

On a shared hosting server, this would obviously potentially put strain on it, which wouldn't be good for you or anyone else on the server. I can recommend the dedicated server here! - I have had next to no problems

Yeah I understand. Since it is a shared server (i.e. hosting many websites) it would be unfair/inefficient to open a custom port for a web application. I think i was having a

Dedicated is way too expensive for me - but I am interested in how a VPS server would perform. Maybe this is a possibility.

Meanwhile, since my website is still in development, I have decided to test the performance of web services on my home server. It may be the case that I can redesign due to the performance constraints (if they exist). Not ideal but it may solve the problem short term. If the website takes off then I can look into upgrading my hosting.

Regards,
Rich.

Hi Richard,

VPS are indeed a good option if a dedicated server is out of reach as yet. You get root access along with it. Morever, we completely manage it & also monitor it for you. So those head-aches do not come in at all. Depending on what kind of VPS you want, you would get the control panels for it.

You might want to check out http://www.eukhost.com/vps_linux.php (for linux) &
