Default Initial questions

Hi, I'd appreciate it if you could answer a few questions.
  1. Is there a significant difference in performance between the c-panel and vps products. If so, could you quantify it?
  2. Is root access availale on the c-panel products? If not, would I have access to httpd.conf?
  3. Are the systems automatically backed up? If so, what is the interface to the backups? How can I check which backups are available, and perform or request a restore?
  4. Do vps systems have a static ip address?
  5. How many vps systems share a single node?
  6. Is there anyway I can can check the performance and load of the node in which my vps is located?
  7. There is a long thread in the vps forum regarding Virgin. Can you summarise this problem? Is it ongoing?
  8. If I order a vps system with c-panel, can I subsequently cancel just the c-panel and maintain the vps subscription?

Thanks for your help.
Keith

Hello Keith, Welcome to the community.

With regards to your questions:

Quote:
[*]Is there a significant difference in performance between the c-panel and vps products. If so, could you quantify it?
Both plans are suitable depending on how you want to host your website. Basically, it all depends on a few important factors like website traffic, selling hosting further, price, running specific applications/ script, resources and so on..

The VPS is like a dedicated server except that you "own" only a part of the server's resources (CPU, RAM, etc.).

EUKHOST does not believe in overloading their servers, so you can be assured about the performance and server uptime on shared server as well.

Quote:
[*]Is root access availale on the c-panel products? If not, would I have access to httpd.conf?
With a cPanel VPS you can have root access to the server and full access to the config files.

Quote:
[*]Are the systems automatically backed up? If so, what is the interface to the backups? How can I check which backups are available, and perform or request a restore?
With a VPS Server, you can decide the backup cycle from weekly, daily or monthly. On a shared server it is set to daily for databases and weekly for website data. On a shared server, you'll probably need to contact one of the support techs and ask them to restore data as available.

Quote:
[*]Do vps systems have a static ip address?
Yes, 2 IP's are free with a VPS package. You can request more by providing a justification on the usage of the IP's.

Quote:
[*]How many vps systems share a single node?
There is no exact number that applies to all nodes. However, I can safely tell you that about 35 to 40% resources are free on the node. This is done to cover up for any emergencies or spikes in usage.

Quote:
[*]Is there anyway I can can check the performance and load of the node in which my vps is located?
You will only have access to your VPS Server.

Quote:
[*]There is a long thread in the vps forum regarding Virgin. Can you summarise this problem? Is it ongoing?
Thomas, who is looking after the issue should update you about it in this thread shortly.

Quote:

We generally do not recommend doing this. But yes, if you are aware of managing a plain server and need that done for a specific purpose you can get the control panel removed.
Please be advised that support for plain servers isn't provided.

I hope the above information helps.

Please feel free to post if you have any further questions.

The Virgin Media problem still currently exists, we're still trying to find the exact cause. We know what's happening however (which is hopeful - TCP SYN ACK packets are being dropped somewhere from the servers back to the Virgin Media customer, and it's not just the datacenter which this is happening to, it effects the UK2 and Ja.Net network).

We should have the issue sorted soon.

Hello Keith,

to the forums.

As Thomas has updated you on Virgin issue, I've answered other questions.

1. Is there a significant difference in performance between the c-panel and vps products. If so, could you quantify it?
Ans: cPanel shared hosting is limited in comparison to VPS Hosting as its users do not have administrative access and software configurations cannot be customized, despite the fact that physical resources are also multiplexed. With VPS Hosting, you can control your own unique file system and CGI-BIN, disk space, system resources and bandwidth.

2. Is root access availale on the c-panel products? If not, would I have access to httpd.conf?
Ans: Root access is not offered on cPanel shared hosting plans and you won't have access to httpd.conf as well. Root access is offered only on VPS, semi dedicated server and Dedicated Servers.

3. Are the systems automatically backed up? If so, what is the interface to the backups? How can I check which backups are available, and perform or request a restore?
Ans: We do have weekly backups but we maintain these backups for our own security purposes and these backups are available for restoration in case of complete system failure only.Alternatively, you can consider our offsite backup plans. There are four different backup plans available. The space allocations are 2 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB & 20 GB depending on the plan you want to go in for. You can check the details at Offsite Backup Service | Backup Solutions | Remote Data Backups

4. Do vps systems have a static ip address?
Ans: Yes

5. How many vps systems share a single node?
Ans: We setup 15-20 VPS per node. We use high specification Dual Quad Core Xeon processor servers with 12 GB RAM and mirrored hard drives which allows us the flexibility to setup 15-20 VPSs on a single node without hampering the overall performance of each VPS.

6. Is there anyway I can can check the performance and load of the node in which my vps is located?
Ans: You won't be able to check the performance and load of the node as you will have access to your VPS only.

Hi Jennifer. Thanks for your prompt response. A couple of follow-up questions:

I understand the difference between the two systems. I was trying to get a feel for the difference between resources (CPU, RAM) available to the packaged solutions (Gold, Bronze) etc. and those available to the VPS server..

Quote:

Okay, so two static ips with the vps systems. For the packaged solutions, are the ips dynamic?

Could you expand upon what you mean by "support ... isn't provided"? Say, I order a vps without c-panel, how will the support I receive differ from the support for a client who orders a vps with c-panel?

Thanks very much for your help,
Keith

Hi Tom, thanks for the reply. I'm not clear on who is affected by the problem. Is it affecting end-users attempting to access sites hosted on eUKhost?

You may use more than 10% CPU on a shared server and you may get away with it if the server doesn't get overloaded, but you won't manage to use more than 10% CPU resources on a VPS.

Nope, they are static IP's

We generally recommend a control panel to manage and operate the VPS. All customers who have a plain VPS would have to configure the DNS, user accounts, mail accounts and other such activities pertaining to the configuration of such VPS' themselves. The support team will not be responsible for this.

You can find more detailed information at eukhost - VPS Rules and Guidelines

Thanks, Jack. Just a couple more.

So the cheaper shared-server option has, if anything, more CPU allocated to it than the VPS solution?

Regarding bandwidth, what happens if I hit my monthly allowance? Am I able to purchase extra bandwidth, or is the VPS simply shutdown?

The c-panel for the packaged solutions appears to include a shell option. Is that just to allow shell access for non-privileged users?

Hi Keith,

A VPS has fixed CPU allocation while on the other hand there is no fixed CPU allocation to a shared hosting account as a result of which a user can get away with more CPU usage as long as the server doesn't get overloaded. This however doesn't apply in case of all accounts nor is it guaranteed to reply upon completely.

As far as bandwidth in concerned, you will receive email notifications once your bandwidth usage reaches 80% of its limit. You have the option to upgrade to the next higher plan in case you need additional bandwidth.

We do not provide SSH access to clients on a shared server however we do have a couple of shared servers reserved on which we offer Jailed Shell access to customers who need shell access in a shared environment.

Definitely, I have been here since last few months and I have learned many things. Now, even I answer to the presales questions if the answer is available on website or forum. If I have some questions I simply open a new thread and the answer there clears my doubt.

In short, EUK has been providing the best services in the hosting industry.

Also, you can check their knowledgebase here. I am sure that would be much helpful for you.
