Default Kentico CMS

Hi,

I'm developing a website hosting for a local charity, based on Kentico's Content Management System (Kentico.com). The development is nearing completion, and I'm now looking for a suitable hosting company (for this and future clients).

It appears Eukhost's shared hosting may meet Kentico's server requirements:

Shared Web Hosting Requirements

·ASP.NET 2.0 support.
·Microsoft SQL Server 2000, MSDE 2000, SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server Express 2005. The server must use case insensitive (CI) collation.
·The server must support full-trust access.
·It's recommended (but not required) that the hosting provider allows ASP.NET applications to write on the disk.

As you can see, "The server must support full-trust access".

Does Eukhost support Full Trust with shared hosting?

The website hosting will have low trafic, and as it is a charity, I'm looking for an inexpensive solution.

James

Hi James,

Welcome to the forum.

ASP.NET versions 3.0 & 2.0 are supported on our Windows Shared Hosting packages.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000, MSDE 2000 and SQL Server Express 2005 all are supported. The server uses case insensitive (CI) collation.

If you are referring to Remote Desktop access as Full-Trust access, we do not provide Remote Desktop access with our shared and reseller packages. SSH access is provided only with VPS Hosting and Dedicated Servers.

We do allow ASP.NET applications writing on the disk to folders/files using ASP scripts.

Feel free to post if you have any doubts or further queries.

Ryan,

I'm not very knowledgeable about Server issues, so I'm unsure what Trust levels are, except that it is security related. Maybe this FAQ on Kentico's website hosting will help you determine if its the same as Shell access:

If you receive an error message like this:
Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

...your web hosting provider may not be supporting full trust permissions for the hosted ASP.NET applications. You need to ask your provider for changing the configuration, moving the web website hosting on some other server or you may need to choose some other hosting provider. You can choose from our web hosting partners whose servers are compatible with Kentico CMS.

Is Full Trust the same as Shell access?

In Kentico's list of hosting partners, there is only one UK host included (so far), but they only support Kentico on a dedicated server. But the website hosting will be low traffic and the charity can't afford dedicated hosting fees.

For this project, I've put the cart before the horse, so to speak! I should have considered this issue at the start of the project, before even choosing Kentico, but I only became aware of it yesterday, after reading the above FAQ - and now the development is almost complete and ready for hosting, so too late to switch to another CMS (like DNN).

Hi James,

Full Trust Access means that the user can call RevertToSelf() to end impersonation and run as the worker process identity. Generally all the website hostings on a shared server run in the same worker process under the same identity which means the worker process identity will have read access to all web folders.

For security reasons we won't be able to offer Full Trust Access on a shared server as Full Trust permissions for ASP.NET applications will allow total control over the running process and may allow a malicious attacker to upload malicious code and execute it on the server.

Moreover, Web applications that are built on the .NET Framework version 1.0 always run with Full trust. It is said that in ASP.NET version 2.0 the Full Trust issue is more or less fixed and you can run those applications under Medium Trust.

Ryan,

Kentico CMS is now based on ASP.Net 2.0. You say that "in ASP.NET version 2.0 the Full Trust issue is more or less fixed and you can run those applications under Medium Trust." Yet, Kentico developer guide (quoted in my first post) specifically says Full Trust is required. And that FAQ quoted in my second post suggests Medium Trust is not sufficient. I will contact Kentico for an explanation, but due to current resource issues, there may be up to two days delay before getting a response.

I had considered using DiscountASP.net (also on Kentico's hosting partners list), but because they are US based, I'm concerned about not finding .co.uk website hostings via Google, when 'Pages from the UK' is selected.

DiscountASP.net offer only one base hosting plan, with enhancements charged extra. They say "Our Web hosting platform is compatible with Kentico and we run in full trust, as we host each website hosting in their own isolated application pool." Do you know what the latter means?

Received an update from Kentico:

"The current version requires Full Trust, and we are still working on making it work with Medium Trust."

In the meantime, perhaps I will look at Windows Virtual Private Server (VPS Hosting).

Default Kentico Hosting Partners

This post should not be in Pre Sales, as I've finally signed up with eUKHost for a Windows VPS Hosting plan - so it should be Post Sales!

Now comes the fun (hopefully lots) and the challenges (hopefully not too severe), as I begin to learn for the first time about Plesk and Virtuozzo, for seting up and managing my client's website hosting. This will be especially challenging, as the website hosting will use Kentico CMS (based on SQL Server). So I expect to need more than a little help.

It may be of interest to eUKHost to know that Kentico publish a list of Hosting Partners here: http://www.kentico.com/Partners/Hosting-Partners.aspx

Unfortunately, there's only one UK-based partner, and that company are unable to provide me with a reasonable cost Windows VPS Hosting solution, which I require for a non-profit organisation.

If (or should I say when) I am successful with this CMS project, I will consider eUKHost for future clients.

For other UK developers looking to host a Kentico CMS, it might be useful if eUKHost was on Kentico's list of Hosting Partners.

Thanks to everyone for answering my Pre Sales questions.

James

Hello James,

I have submitted their partnership form so lets wait for their reply.

I sincerely appreciate your gesture to help growth of eUKhost and we will definitely get some potential customers from Kentico's partner listing.

Good. As you will have read from my earlier posts, potential customers cannot use shared hosting - because Kentico CMS requires full trust mode - so they will require VPS Hosting at least. Though Kentico plan to have their CMS operational in medium trust, if they can achieve it technically.

Kentico themselves may wish to be involved in evaluating your servers for compatibility. If I can get my client's website hosting up and running, maybe that could be a useful test case.

My website hosting design is ready. I'm currently trying to understand Kentico's deployment procedure, plus as I said earlier, I need to become familiar with Plesk and Virtuozzo.
