Default Linux shared hosting

Hi,

Am interested in your service (Linux shared hosting) and have two or three questions before I commit.

Could you confirm mySQL and PHP versions? Also which version of cpanel?

I will probably be using a CMS such as CMSMadeSimple. Could you tell me what the max script size I am allowed to run is? I will need at least 8Mb and preferably 16Mb.

Could you confirm that PHP safe mode is switched off?

Could you confirm that PHP Tokenizer support is available?

Do I have access to my own php.ini file? I'm thinking of needing to change register_globals etc depending on whether it's on or off

If I need a cron job set up can I ask tech support to do that for me?

Looks like a good product you are offering

I have answered all your questions below:-

Could you confirm mySQL and PHP versions? Also which version of cpanel?
Ans: We offer PHP 5.x and MySQL 5.x on our servers. You can mention the PHP and MySQL version you require in comment box when you sign up with us. We offer cPanel 11 on our shared hosting packages.

I will probably be using a CMS such as CMSMadeSimple. Could you tell me what the max script size I am allowed to run is? I will need at least 8Mb and preferably 16Mb.
Ans: There is no max script size as such. You should not overload the server and thats most important for us.

Could you confirm that PHP safe mode is switched off?
Ans: You can set is as per your requirements.

Could you confirm that PHP Tokenizer support is available?
Ans: Yes

Do I have access to my own php.ini file? I'm thinking of needing to change register_globals etc depending on whether it's on
Ans: We don’t allow php.ini access from the shared hosting accounts on our servers. You can enable or disable various php.ini functions from .htaccess of your account, you can also enable/disable safe mode, register globals, sessions and many other functions from .htaccess.

If I need a cron job set up can I ask tech support to do that for me?
Ans: You will need to do it via cPanel.

I would say everything you want from your comments should be achievable on that plan. And also, if you have any trouble the support team should be able to help you. You can get very quick responses using livechat.

Thanks for your replies. sounds quite good.

Could I maybe pick up on one point though. Is there really no limit on max script size in php.ini? The reason I mention it is because I have stumbled over this problem plenty of times before. I'm hoping to develop a school webiste using a CMS. It will probably be cmsmadesimple which has modest requirements but I haven't yet ruled out drupal - and it needs at least 16Mb or it's the white screen of death whenever you add a new module.

Max File size limit in php.ini is 8MB on all our servers getting filled right now. I'm not sure if we have 16 MB on any of our servers, but I will get this confirmed from one of our system admins asap.

Masterplumber, I've just PM'd you (with Mark's blessing) with some suggestions — thought I'd alert you here as sometimes it's not obvious you have a PM waiting (depending on your profile setup)!

Thanks in anticipation ...

Default Drupal 6 requires 16Mb memory. Cpanel Hosting OK or Not?

I've been following this thread as I am looking into installing a CMS for my website hosting. Drupal is a possibility. I am on a Cpanel hosting platinum package.

I know from the thread that the value in php.ini for upload_max_filesize is now 8mb. But what is the maximum value of memory_limit available in Cpanel hosting?

I've come across this link from drupal.org
http://drupal.org/node/207036" Increase PHP memory limit (Sorry I can't insert link directly here but I'm a newbie to EUKhost.)

"A PHP memory limit of 16MB is required for Drupal 6. Some sites may need more than 16MB if they are using many contributed modules."

I think the version of Drupal available through fantastico is 4.7.5 but obviously if I went down the Drupal road I would like to upgrade to version 6 in the future.

Edit: just pasted phpinfo.php into my website hosting and I can see memory_limit is 32M. Can someone from EUKhost confirm that this is the value that applies to apps like CMS systems setup on CPanel hosting? In which case Drupal 6 should run OK.

If I wanted to increase memory_limit (for example Silverstripe CMS asks for 32M minimum) could it be done through .htaccess or is it locked down at 32M for Cpanel hosting?

Sorry, if I've posted this in the wrong place. I'm new to the forum and hadn't realised that this thread is in pre-sales questions. Please move it if it belongs better somewhere else.

I don't think you'd be able to change the limit yourself as it's not in the places on the server you'll have access. Obviously atm, 32MB should be ok for most software but with time, it probably won't be. I'm guessing at that point eUK will up the limit but currently I'm guessing it will stay where it is.

Hi Pete,

32 MB memory_limit is more than what is needed for Drupal 6. You cannot override memory_limit variable from .htaccess, but we can raise memory_limit on your server as all our new servers are high specification Dell servers with 12 GB RAM, 2 x E5420 CPU's and 2x2x6 MB CPU cache.

Thanks for the info on memory_limit. A quick trawl round the web on CMS & Wordpress and memory limit problems in shared hosting shows eUKhost in quite a good light at 32mb allocation. Quite a few people report their hosts as locking it down at 8 or 16M.

low specification servers can never afford to have high value for memory_limit. The only reason we got these Dual CPU E5420 servers is to offer best hosting service to our customers.
