Default Linux VPS First Questions

Hi All,

I am a "Senior Citizen" with a need to exercise the grey matter who's web presence is purely a hobby. I have been with my current host since 1999 and was extremely satisfied until I moved from their windows servers to a Linux package some 2 years ago. The move has been an unmitigated disaster with constant performance issues and poor support and I am now looking to move hosts. I have been paying top price for my web space which I do not begrudge as long as the service is there (£189/Year for 800Mb). To this end I have been lurking on this forum for a couple of weeks trying to get a handle on the reliability of EukHosts.

I find this public forum refreshing as it shows customers problems and subsequent resolutions warts and all. I am impressed with the involvement of the Eukhost staff who seem to be as enthusiastic as the wider community of helpful customers.

I am thinking of taking the Linux VPS route (L-VPS-01) with cPanel. I have a semi comercial site hosted in The States and hosting it here also would mean I was marginally better off although cost is not the primary consideration. The main reason is to mitigate some of the problems of being on a shared server and to extend my knowledge. I don't propose to sell webspace and any further sites hosted will remain under my control.

My plan would be to initially sign up for 3 months and register a new domain for ns purposes, configure the VPS and clone my database intensive site to assess its performance. If all goes well move the remainder over and covert to an annual contract.

My concerns are that I have at present limited knowledge of either Linux or Apache although I'm a quick learner, am I biting off more than I can chew?

Martyn!

Initial few days wont make you feel comfortable with the VPS as cPanel VPS comes with WHM which has many functions integrated in it. You may find it difficult to understand all those options as most of those are rarely used, however one finds it difficult to figure out what is important and what is not out of all those options.

You wont need to get involved with Apache, PHP or MySQL as our VPS plans are fully managed and we will take care of assigning a fully configured VPS to you. You will need to take our help with setup of nameservers and hostname of your VPS, but once you get through all this basics then you wont think of moving back to shared or reseller hosting

We have some highly knowledgeable members on this forum and we have 100% transparency over here. I hope you will manage to improve your technical knowledge once you get started with our VPS Service.

Hi Martyn,
I myself went from reseller shared hosting to VPS a few months back. It has been a steep learning curve initially but once you get familiarised with everything, you soon are able to understand and do most of the common things on your VPS. I was on to support initially a lot getting things set up as I wanted/needed them but after that, it's just odd bits and pieces.

If you want to know more about the move and things, drop me a PM.

Glad to hear that

You won't see any frequent reboots in future as the node which is hosting your VPS is not getting filled anymore so there should not be any problems in future.

Our new nodes have 2 x Quad Core Intel Xeon E5420, 2.5GHz CPU's, 2 x 400 GB SAS drives ( hot plug ), RAID1 and 8GB RAM. If 1 CPU fails then it can be replaced within no time and if 1 drive fails then it can be replaced on live server without any downtime. I hope you have never seen such high specification servers with any other VPS hosting provider
