Default php script execution time limit for Joomla!/Virtuemart

Hi!
Is there a limit on the cpu time for a php script execution on shared hosting? the reason I ask;
Ran into this problem with the existing host (Bluehost), where a Joomla/Virtuemart script times out with a 500 error every time I do a products update (crunching a long CSV file into SQL Server database). Their support do not seem to be able to help due to the server setup, editing php.ini seems to be overridden.
I never asked the question before purchasing as the problem has never arisen before with other hosting services. Was pretty much a case of ensure that MySQL and php are available - and off you go...

Any other considerations for running Joomla/VM shop I may have missed out ?

Any input from admin/users will be much appreciated.

I don't think there is a specific execution time limit but for obvious reasons on shared hosting you can't be eating all resources of the server to the detrement of other peoples accounts.

So as far as I know you can use the fair amount of resources that are allocated to you without a specific execution time limit.

I have used scripts such as Joomla with no problems on shared hosting in the past (as well as many other scripts involving PHP/MySQL.

Someone from eUKhost will obviously see this post soon and correct me if I am wrong or feel free to double check with them by directly contacting them.

Hope that helps and welcome to the forum community!

Thank you for a quick reply!
Sounds good.
I hope the script does not eat up all the resources! It normally takes about 1min to run through and that is no more than once a day. On the current hosting, what seemed to be the problem was that in php.ini cpu_execution_time=30 (< I've never had a problem runnign the same script on other shared hosting packages - or have any need to touch php.ini.

Thanks again!

Max Execution time is set to 300 Seconds on our servers.

I hope this should be sufficient for you as you are based in UK and it wont take any time to upload files or dump database backup on our servers which are based in UK. You get upto 20 Mbps upload and download speed on our servers if you are in UK with a good Broadband connection while you may never get more than 1 Mbps speed if the servers are based in USA.

If it runs on over that - I can certainly assume a problem with the script! >>

The whole process involves uploading the CSV data - 4Mb max, takes seconds - and then processing it into sql, with the admin interface script sitting there waiting for the result of conversion, which is where the probs occured.
Pretty sure it never gets near 5mins, even on the biggest files.

Fast connection will be appreciated -especially during the installation time - Joomla! Ecommerce Edition is quite a large package. Yes, got 6.7MBps ADSL here (on a good day), so should work well.

Thanks for a positive reply!

Might need a bit of assitance in setting up with shared SSL when it comes to it.

I keep learning a lot of things that I didn't know about the hosting this week - some really interesting information to know.

Glad that your script will work on here valtch - I assume then you are now looking for the most suitable package for yourself now?

Yes, it's amasing what you get to read and hear about at times! All educational though

I'll almost certainly go for the Copper account for now and upgrade later if needed - once the matters have been sorted out with the current provider.

Good luck with sorting out your current provider and getting your new account with eUKhost. I am sure you won't be disappointed - I certainly haven't been! .
