Post Potential customer

Hi

Unhappy with my current host I am looking for a new reliable one.

Looking through some of your threads, I seem to be coming across a trend that concerns me.
post 4573 on here(I can't post URL's yet showpost.php?p=4573) and others like it seem to imply that when a HDD fails in a server, you have to almost always revert to a backup that can be upto a week out of date.
I have a couple of questions relating to this post and the configs

Quote:
Concorde.eukhost.com has suffered a catastrophic primary Hard drive failure. The partition tables are unreadable, and no data is recoverable from this drive.
What is meant by primary hard drive ? Do you mean the primary drive in a mirrored pair or is the primary drive a single boot device or something else?

Quote:
Backup drive is intact.
What does this refer to ? Is this a mirrored drive, backup tape or the data drive ?

Quote:
We have replaced primary HDD and re-installed the base OS along with cPanel.
Seems to answer the 1st question above, if you had to re-install then it obviously wasn't mirrored or the mirror drive also failed

Quote:
We have initiated restoration of all accounts and data from the secondary and it should not take more than couple of hours to restore everything as it was on 26th November 2006.
Maybe it was mirrored then - in which case why do you have to do a restore before the server can be available - the idea of mirroring is surely to prevent service outage.

I need a reliable host with reliable equipment that is resilient. Can you confirm the configuration from a hardware resilience perspective for a Windows VPS.

Thanks,

Hello Martyn,

All our new nodes for Windows VPS hosting are setup with RAID5. RAID5 is the best option for Windows Servers as it improves Disk performance as well as HDD reliability. Some of our old servers in 2006 were setup without RAID but now we have RAID on most of our servers and we have better technique to restore servers in case of failure.

We have drastically improved level of our Service in last 12 months and we are continuing to improve. Problems cannot be avoided with servers in shared environment but we have procedures to bring everything back to normal on a troubled server within no time.

Dell has started offering good discounts to us from last couple of months so now we have started ordering servers with SAS drives which has improved uptime of our new servers. Our target this year is to improve our average uptime from 99.96% to 99.97% and hopefully we will make it possible this year.

Ok, that sounds good and was the kind of answer I was looking for relating to the disk config.

Do you have a demo server that I could log onto just to be sure i'm happy with the control I would get over the VPS.

Well i've taken the plunge and signed up a couple of hours ago, just need the login details and i'll start transferring a couple of sites across.

Little concerned after reading the VPS forum about MSSQL on the Windows VPS appears to cause problems - this was posted back in mid December and there was mention in that thread of a dedicated MSSQL server being setup by the end of the month . Has this been achieved yet ?

I have a couple of MSSQL db's to move across, not high volume but still I don't want them going offline all the time.

I have requested our VPS team to setup your windows VPS on the new Dual quad Core Xeon Servers received from Dell. You should not face any problem on this new node. We need to organize our setup process in different way to have separate mssql server as we will need to keep the mssql server as well as the windows vps nodes in same network to make this possible. There are some limitations involved but we will figure out some solution on this problem ASAP.
