Default Question about Reseller to VPS

Hello,

Im presently on a reseller package, and am already thinking about going for VPS package. Now my query is, would going from reseller to VPS rely on me to manage the server far more than being on a reseller package and just pretty much leaving it to run itself? I prefer to have as little worries as possible as I prefer to concentrate on the websites themselves and obviously Search Engine Optimization.

Also, what would be a rough guide to the amount of websites the VPS could handle? and would it be able to handle a few Ecommerce websites without grinding to a hault? Most of my sites are small businesses wanting to advertise on the web without CPU intensive tasks, as I tend to stay away from the large companies.

The advantages to me would be, dedicated IP away from Shared servers and less Google Bot crawl issues (id hope) which has been driving me insane of late, and also the facility to do a full backup and restore of a website rather than just manually backing up mysql, home etc.

Any advise would be great
Thank you
Sam

Hello Sam,

You can definitely upgrade to a VPS and you need not worry about the management part as our VPS plans are fully managed. You will have the ability to create and manage accounts as on your reseller plan. You can get in touch with our support department anytime if you need any assistance with the functioning of your VPS.

You can easily host a number of websites on a VPS without hampering it's performance. I won't be able to provide an estimate on the number of websites you can host as it also depends upon the VPS plan you upgrade to.

With a VPS, you will have the ability to take full backup using Virtuozzo. For taking backups of an individual website hosted on your VPS, you can use the backup feature in cPanel control panel.

Hi Sam
I followed the same route as you - with what sounds like a similar type of websites and customers. I have a few e-commerce sites and similar and my VPS runs them all just fine.

I did have to upgrade the VPS because of disc space (2 of my shops have over 4000 items of stock - that's a lot of pictures) but performance has been great.

The day to day management aspect of the VPS is not much different to your reseller account - although there will be a learning curve to start with, and probably a bit of security stuff (firewall etc) to set up at the beginning (VPS support will help). Once it's all up and running it really is easy to manage.

Hi Sam,

We recently upgraded our reseller package to Semi Dedicated. It is worth considering for the disk space and bandwidth.

Thanks for the replies guys . The initial learning curve im not really worried about, its the timescale of maintaining the server after that I think is my main concern really. Decisions.. decisions

Server maintanence from reseller to VPS should be no different as they are both fully managed .

Although both are fully managed, going through the learning curve allows you to do a lot of things support used to do for you on the reseller as you didn't have the rights to. If you do run into any problems though, support are there to help.

That is a valid point. You have more hands on control but the same responsibility.

You can host 5000 single html homepage websites.

You won't be able to host more than 1 website like eUKhost.com on a L-VPS-01.

Thats a fair point. It all depends on many variables, site size, what is being implemented on the site and traffic.

In fairness eUKhost is quite a large site . But I do understand the point that Mark is trying to demonstrate here .
