Default Semi-Dedicated

... not sure if this is the correct forum for this question ... feel free to flame me if not!

I need to purchase a semi-dedicated server and transfer a couple of sites from my current VPS.

Normally I would need to transfer sites and data across and then wait for DNS replication. I'm hoping that I can bypass this a bit - would it be possible to transfer the IP address of my current VPS to the new semi-dedicated so that the only downtime for my customers is the time it takes to reload their data?

Also (now I'm really pushing my luck) is there any chance that during my switchover period I could only be charged for one of the servers (obviously the more expensive semi-dedicated)?

Thanks

Hello Paul,

When you do decide to upgrade, we will first setup your semi-dedicated server and then allow you time to move your websites. The VPS will be terminated five days from the time you upgrade your plan.

Whilst migrating the websites, the nameservers IP's would change. If you are using the DNS provided by us, then the downtime will be very very less. If you are using a set of DNS registered elsewhere, then the downtime will be the turnover period for the IP's.

When you do upgrade, the IP's will change. This is owing to the fact that we set-up VPS' and semi-dedicated servers on different hardware nodes.

Thanks Nick,

While the 5 days is very generous (wasn't expecting anything!) unfortunately I need to get the new server set up asap and will probably order it today - but will be migrating one of the current sites based on customer preference which might be a couple of weeks.

Not a problem I'm happy to pay for both for the short switchover period (if I end up cancelling the current VPS near the beginning of a billing cycle will I need to pay for the complete month?)

It looks like the best way to go will be to order a new server rather than do it as an upgrade - this being the case is it OK to specify 'no domain' when I order?

You can go ahead and order using the option "No Domain". We send out invoices 15 days before the renewal. So if you request your VPS to be cancelled one week before the due date, that would be good enough.
