Unhappy Semi Dedicated or Dedicated?

Hi,

I started off with a VPS from eukhost just in the last month or so and then cancelled it and went for a semi-dedicated. I've not even used either yet for anything!

I don't want to be a reseller or do anything for profit. Whatever I eventually do will be for the use of my small island community here in Orkney.

I'd just like an HONEST opionion from people as to which REALLY is the best bet for me...

The Semi-Dedicated server I have now OR a fully Dedicated server (It would have to be the eUK E4600 as my pocket money wouldn't run to anything bigger!) Honestly, guys which would be the best?

I do know that you guys will install stuff for me as it was done only yesterday... If you end up saying 'Go for a dedicated server' would the support staff install the following for me as they said they had done yesterday:

1. Install/enable PostgreSQL.

2. Install/enable PSpell.

3. Install/enable Session trans_sid.

4. Install/enable GD Version 2.0 or above.

5. Install/enable Flite.

6. Install/enable Zend Optimizer.

7. Install/enable Ion Cube Installer

8. WHM and Cpanel installed but NOT Fantastico.

Also, would my server be automatically backed up or would I have to do that?

BTW... I have found a coupon code for 10% off EVERY month and one for 15% off (lost that code though ) but can't remember if that was every month or just one! If I could use either it would be great as it would go a little way to pay for the Cpanel which is kind of expensive if you're not reselling and on a dedicated server.

I've found the same server in the U.S. for a lot less but I don't want to leave eukhost as you guys are the only ones I trust.

I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone as to what would be the best for me.

Many thanks!

If you have to choose between a dedicated server and a semi dedicated server, I would recommend a dedicated server as a physical server is certainly more powerful than a virtual server. You won't be sharing the server with any other users which will allow you total control and flexibility. We use branded servers from Dell and the difference seen in level of performance of these servers has been appreciated by all of our dedicated server clients. A Dedicated Server would also give you far more control over your hosting and since our dedicated servers are fully managed, you have no reason to worry about anything.

We have many customers who've had absolutely no problems with their Dedicated Servers ( Dell ) from last 2 - 3 years and they've hardly opened any tickets for technical support.

We'll install all your required components on a Dedicated Server . We will also help you with migration.

As far as backups is concerned , we offer 20 GB remote backup space free with server which adds more security for your data. We can configure daily, weekly backups as per your requirements.

Now, I'm going to go the other way - I personally think you would be better getting a semi-dedicated server. The type of site it sounds like you are hosting should mean that a semi-ded has more than enough power and space. I'm currently hosting 20 sites on one semi-ded and will be adding another 15 to that soon. And yes, while you may be sharing a node with other people, the number is small and if you notice things getting slow, go on to support and see if someone else is hammering the node and they'll fix it. I've only ever had to do that once and it was because a java module on another server had gone mad!

So as I say, if I was you I'd go for semi-ded. If you wanted to upgrade later you can do but I think it seems daft paying for something if you don't really need it.

I agree. You can always upgrade if you feel the need to in the future.
