Default Semi-dedicated VPS queries

Hello,

Before I comit to buying a semi-dedicated VPS package I'd like to ask a few questions.

1, What firewall solution is provided, if any? If shared, what provision is there for opening ports? What other options are there?

2. The following post (eukhost.com/forums/f29/where-i386-folder-6898/) details applications making changes to the System32 folder. I will need to install MailEnable for example which may or may not make changes to the files - what happens if an application does make a change?

3, What antivirus measures are in place? In line with query 2 above if there are no antivirus measures in place then I cannot install my own antivirus either since there will be changes to the System32 files.

4. As noted above I will wish to install my own mail server software,
4a, is there any problem with this?
4b, section 9 of the T&Cs state there is a sending limit on email. I occasionally do email marketing for myself and one of my clients to lists we have created ourselves with our own clients and business. Does the sending limit apply to those using eUkHost email servers and if so the limits would not apply if running my own mail server software?? Whilst so far we have only ever sent something like 500 emails in any one session I need to know the issues here. Please note that I use an opt-in and opt-out system to maintain our lists at all times.

4, Should we end up needed more disk space, can this be provisioned or would a move to a dedicated server be required?

Thanks in advance,

David.

Hi David, I will attempt to answer all of your questions

1. With Windows, standard Windows firewall is available, with Linux you can request CSF to be installed. Ports can be easily opened with both firewalls.

2. If an application does make a change, it's usually restricted by an application built into the windows system, you will usually get a warning before anything is changed or it will restrict the change completely.

3. Antiviral solutions can be installed with ease, such restrictions won't disallow installation / disrupt functionality.

4. You can sent 750 mails per hour with a semi-dedicated server.

5. You would need to upgrade to a dedicated server if additional disk space / bandwidth is required

Hello David,

I have answered all your questions as follows :-

1. What firewall solution is provided, if any? If shared, what provision is there for opening ports? What other options are there?
:- With Windows semi-dedicated server you will get the default Windows Firewall. You can open or block all ports as you would have Administrator privileges on your server. You can also install any third party firewall if you wish to. For Linux Server : We will install CSF firewall.
For Windows Server : If you choose Plesk control panel you will get default Mailenable firewall.

2. The following post (eukhost.com/forums/f29/where-i386-folder-6898/) details applications making changes to the System32 folder. I will need to install MailEnable for example which may or may not make changes to the files - what happens if an application does make a change?
:- For any assistance/information regarding system 32 folder changes, I would request you to get in touch with our VPS support department via our Helpdesk or Live Chat.

3. What antivirus measures are in place? In line with query 2 above if there are no antivirus measures in place then I cannot install my own antivirus either since there will be changes to the System32 files.
:- Anti virus solution is not provided with a Windows server as standard. You can opt for Dr. Web Anti Virus with Plesk control panel if you need one for your server. You can also install a third party antivirus software if you wish to. The only thing you will need to keep in mind is resource usage.

You can install a third party mail server software, however you will need to manage it on your own as we won't be able to provide support for a third party application.

The reason for having these email limits on all our plans is to avoid load on your server and thereby preventing possible downtime. So even if you use your own mail server, it won't make much of a difference. If you are planning to send emails more than the specified limit, I would suggest you to send them in batches rather than in one go.

4. Should we end up needed more disk space, can this be provisioned or would a move to a dedicated server be required?
:- In that case, we recommend an upgrade to a dedicated server.

Please feel free to post if you have any more questions.

In addition to all the above mentioned points you do get a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee on the Semi Dedicated Servers. With this option you can try the Semi Dedicated server for a couple of weeks and see if it meets your basic hosting requirements, if not you can either opt for a refund or upgrade to the Dedicated Server immediately.
