Question Shared or Dedicated SSL certificate?

Hi

I want to run a small shopping cart but before I use your web hosting I would like to know what form of shared SSL do you provide ?

Also in your opinion, what are the advantages of shared/dedicated SSL ?

TIA.

Hello Tia,

Shared SSL works through a different URL which includes hostname of the server. You can see my post located at Shared SSL Certificates Added. for detailed explanation.

Advantage of having dedicated SSL is to gain trust of your potential buyers. Some customers may feel uncomfortable to put their CC details on a website hosting which has different secure URL.

If you are want your customers to put their credit card details on your shopping cart then dedicated SSL is much better. If you are planning to use payment gateway like paypal, 2checkout, worldpay or nochex then you dont need SSL certificate as your customers will be redirected on secure form of this gateways and they will put their credit card information on their website hosting so you don't need SSL certificate on your shopping cart.

I wanted to add for online shopping carts customers expect SSL when they Login. Whether you are storing their financial details of your website hosting or not. Most customers won't know what SSL really is. But look for the standard padlock sign and "SECURED SITE" writing. IMO you NEED to have SSL on your website hosting if it is anything to do with shopping.

For myself I use Paypal etc to process the checkout/getting money bit. But once you Login you are on an SLL connection. Safe and shows the customer you are serious about doing business.

Only disadvantage I have found with Shared SSL is the domian name changes (not a biggie since your domain name is mentioned in there) and it gives most people the "Do you accept this certificate" Pop Up. With dedicated SSL your customers would not see anything.
