Smile Some info on Shared hosting please

Hi

I am thinking of ordering the Shared Copper package and would be greatful if you would answer some questions.

Will you host a .name?

How much will the total cost be for the hosting package, the .name, an additional .co.uk and a .com? Is this exclusive of external charges e.g. nominet?

I'm unclear about my domain names and their registrations. I think mine are with 1and1; do I have to transfer them to eukhost? What are the reasons for doing so / not doing so?

How many MySQL Server databases will I be able to have running?

If my website hostings are successful and I need to upgrade how much will it cost? How will the charge be calculated? One of your pre-sales article questions says "If you want to upgrade you bandwidth or diskspace you have to pay for the difference in prices of plans for plan upgrades." Does this mean that if I want to upgrade after 8 months I will have to pay the difference for the whole year?

Many questions for 23 quid! Thanks for your time

Frazer

Hello Frazer,

Here are my answers for your questions :-

Will you host a .name?
Ans :- Yes. We have no problem with a .name domain. Registration option is not available on our website hosting but we can provide you with preferred .name domain for £15 per year.

How much will the total cost be for the hosting package, the .name, an additional .co.uk and a .com? Is this exclusive of external charges e.g. nominet?
Ans :- 22.99 + £15 + £18 + £0 ( .com will be free ). You don't need to bother about nominet part as that will be managed by API of our billing system.

I'm unclear about my domain names and their registrations. I think mine are with 1and1; do I have to transfer them to eukhost? What are the reasons for doing so / not doing so?
Ans :- If they are offering low price for registration then keep the domains with then and point nameservers of your domains to our nameservers. We will send information of nameservers in welcome email. Disadvantage of having domains with them would be management of 2 separate accounts but if that saves you some ££'s then you can leave your domains over there. They make no profit in domain registration as they expect customers to purchase hosting as well with the domains so you have to think and make a decision.

How many MySQL Server databases will I be able to have running?
Ans :- Unlimited MySQL databases. adding multiple databases makes no problem for our servers as even a single database can take all resources of a server. Quantity of databases has got nothing to do with performance of our servers.

Ans :- You will pay difference for 4 months only. There's no reason for you to pay for service that you never used.

I have answered 53 questions of a potential customer for copper package so this one was nothing in comparison. You are most welcome to put some more questions

Thanks for the prompt reply - and on a Sunday too

"we can provide you with preferred .name domain for £15 per year."
Not sure what this means and I may have asked my question badly. I already own the .name domain (and the .com and .co.uk, all through 1&1) and would like webspace for it (/them). I assume from your 'registration' answer that I can keep the registration at 1&1 but point the name server to eukhost? Would it still be within the same package?

Thanks for the prices.

Back to registrations - looking at 1&1 the info they want is 'Primary name server', '1. Seondary name server', '2. Seondary name server' and '3. Seondary name server' - is this the info you send out upon registration?
In fact their registration for .co.uk is cheaper so looks like I would move the registration of the .com to eukhost and leave the other two. Thanks for the explanation.

If the .name and the .co.uk domains were registered elsewhere would it behave any different? Would it be one of those cases where you browse through the website hosting but the browser's web address stays the same? (I'm not really sure how this works.)

MySQL - cool

8 months - cool

And hopefully I won't have to ask 53 questions before I understand.... although it is a challenge!

I gave pricing for registration of .name domain name but if you wish to keep it with 1&1 then you have to pay nothing for hosting of .name or .co.uk domain to us. You can signup with transfer option for the .com domain name and we will send welcome email to you with nameserver information.

Primary and Secondary nameservers will be included in the welcome email so all you need to do is login in your account with 1&1 and put those nameservers over there. wait for 12 hours and then add your .name and .co.uk domain as addon domain or parked domain from the control panel and both will start working from your web hosting account with us.

addon domain will allow you to have a separate website hosting for a particular domain and parked domain will allow you to point respective domain to the website hosting of main domain.

You will get welcome email after 30 mins of signup so make sure that you spend some time till then in watching flash tutorials of cpanel control panel located at http://www.eukhost.com/support/cpanel.php

we have a good knowledgebase located at http://www.eukhost.com/support/knowledgebase/ and this active forum for instant help on general technical stuff.

for everything else you are most welcome to contact our support team from http://support.eukhost.com

Thanks for the replies.

When I go througgh the order process there's a £9 fee for transfer of registrar. This is suprising as your answer to my How much will it all cost question was that the .com would be free. And your answer to my What are the advantages and disadvantages of transferring the registration question did not mention a £9 transfer fee.

as per your first post I mentioned registration pricing and we give 1 domain free with our web hosting packages to allow new customers to launch their website hosting and our free domain helps them to keep their expenses low.

domain transfers are charged and there's no option for me to make any changes in transfer pricing as our billing system will have problems if I try to make any changes just for your signup. you can simply proceed with the signup for now and pay for transfer and I will provide you with the free domain anytime you need a new one in future.

Red face

Having been peaved at this all day I've now reread my first post and realise that "How much will the total cost be for the hosting package, the .name, an additional .co.uk and a .com?" does indeed look like I wanted the price to buy the domains - my apologies for getting shirty.

So my final question is: if all my domains are still registered with 1&1 but hosted by eukhost via addon domain, and I have no domains registered with eukhost, will there be any noticable limitations compared to having them registed and hosted at eukhost? Will there still be the 3 separate webspaces and pop/smtp emails for all 3 domains? Will the browser/surfer notice any difference.

Again thanks for your time.

From what I think you are asking there shouldn't be any difference irregardless of whether you register the domains through eUKhost or 1&1 as long as everything gets configured correctly!! (such as nameservers etc). So you will be able to have 3 different webspaces (as long as you get the relevant hosting packages) and you will be able to have email for all three domains, again subject to the hosting package you pick.

Finally, as far as I am aware, the browser / surfer won't notice any difference at all because it doesn't make a difference to them, visible or otherwise, who you register the domain with.

Hope that helps .

you wont have any problem with whatever method you choose. I will suggest you to signup with the option "I will use my existing domain and update nameservers only"

This way your account will be setup on top of the main domain that you choose at the time of signup and then you can point nameservers of all your domains to our nameservers from your account with 1and1.

you can request us for free domain later and you can add it as a addon domain from your control panel. procedure is quite simple and webmasters never face any problems with cpanel. If you are advanced web user then cpanel will look one of the most user friendly control panel to you.

Thanks David for your comments and good luck with your website hosting.

I've signed up to the copper package using the "I will use my existing domain and update nameservers only" option with my .com. However 1&1 say "Older domain packages may not have full DNS management. Upgrade to the latest version to access this feature." which means I'm stuck as I cannot log into my cpanel. Can my package be changed to my .name, which has DNS management, or have I just wasted my money?

Why is it so complicated? I only want a bit of web space for my domains!

1&1 are about the worst people to go with if you just want a domain (well, from my experience). Although everyone says it takes 2 days for DNS to propogate, they take longer... Why don't you just get a fresh domain from eUKhost, at least then that will be all your problems sorted.

I'm only a forum gremlin (moderator), and do not work for eUKhost in any way. Opinions expressed by me are mine only, and do not reflect those of either eUKhost or any company that may be listed above.

Flesso,

I have a client with all their domains registered with 1&1 (he has about 90), I have recently changed his name servers over to hosting at eUKHost and it took about 3 hours to propagate and using www.dnsstuff.com I could see it updated all the primary NIC's in one go.

I did something similar with ukReg.com and it took about the same time but it updated the NIC's 1 by 1.

That was my experience anyway.

Yep ! we can swap your domain name. get the .name domain pointed to the nameservers sent in welcome email and open a ticket for me in sales department and I will swap your domain. if you have no problem in disclosing the domains over here then you can reply here itself.

its not as complicated as 1and1 is making you feel. we've never restricted our customers from using features as we earn sufficient profit on domain registrations which allows us to keep our service transparent. nominet sells .co.uk domains for £5.5 for 2 years + VAT. 1and1 sells for the same price so they have to trick customers to earn profit.

DNS updates dont take any time this days. new domain registrations which we do get registered in 5 mins and most of the customers see their website hostings online as soon as they signup. even nameservers updates take 1 - 2 hours only on our end.

Thank you to everyone for the replies I would like to emphasise that my moan was directed at my lack of knowledge & understanding and not at eUKhost.

I would have happily stayed at 1&1 but the process of finding out whether their hosting packages would take 3 domains and how much it would be took 2 months, and they have still only answered one of those questions. So I looked around and eUKhost has answered those questions and many more in much less time.

Thanks for offering to change the domain name.

One again thanks.

Hello Adrian,

I've swapped your domain name as per your request. make sure that you get your nameservers changed now. please point DNS of your domain name to following nameservers :-

ns25.eukdns.com: 87.117.234.244

ns26.eukdns.com: 87.117.234.250

Looks like I'm getting something wrong but I can't see what. I know it's cheeky to ask here but can anyone see what's up? I've sent an email to 1&1 support but don't hold out too much hope of a sensible reply.

Click the pic for the full size image. Thanks in advance for any help.

you dont need to put the IP address over there. simply put ns25.eukdns.com in first box and ns26.eukdns.com in second box.

save and wait for 3 - 5 hours.
