One consideration is that I may use SQL Server Standard or Enterprise rather than Express, can you confirm the cost for Hyper-V as it's not on your website?
|
The cost for SQL server enterprise and standard edition is same for semi-dedicated VPSes and Hyper-V VPSes.
MSSQL 2005 Standard : £39 per month
MSSQL 2005 Enterprise : £49 per month.

Also, given semi-dedicated limits the accounts per machine to 6 and Hyper-V doesn't, could this mean Hyper-V could be slower in practice? (due to more users potentially hogging resource? i.e. processor time)

The most important thing is, we keep
40% of free resources on our hardware nodes, no matter if it is Semi-Dedicated or Hyper-V.
The main difference between Semi-Dedi and Hyper-V is,
Windows
Semi-Dedicated VPS is a virtual environment created using
software virtualization (Virtuozzo) while
Hyper-V is a
hardware virtualization platform. You get
dedicated RAM on a Hyper-V VPS and other resources similar to a physical dedicated server. Another major difference between the two is the operating system. Windows Semi Dedicated Server comes with Windows server 2003 OS while Hyper-V Windows VPS comes with Windows Server 2008 OS.
So, you will definitely get much stability with Hyper-V as compare to Semi-dedi.

Finally, any other major considerations re: day to day use when choosing between semi-dedicated or Hyper-V? Have read through previous posts, aside from the operating system version and Hyper-V t there appears to be little practical difference in use?
