Default SQL Server Costs on Hyper-V VPS

Hi,

Deciding whether to use a semi-dedicated or Hyper-V server for a site I'm going to launch shortly.

One consideration is that I may use SQL Server Standard or Enterprise rather than Express, can you confirm the cost for Hyper-V as it's not on your website?

Also, given semi-dedicated limits the accounts per machine to 6 and Hyper-V doesn't, could this mean Hyper-V could be slower in practice? (due to more users potentially hogging resource? i.e. processor time)

Finally, any other major considerations re: day to day use when choosing between semi-dedicated or Hyper-V? Have read through previous posts, aside from the operating system version and Hyper-V t there appears to be little practical difference in use?

Thanks, Justin

The cost for SQL server enterprise and standard edition is same for semi-dedicated VPSes and Hyper-V VPSes.

MSSQL 2005 Standard : £39 per month
MSSQL 2005 Enterprise : £49 per month.

The most important thing is, we keep 40% of free resources on our hardware nodes, no matter if it is Semi-Dedicated or Hyper-V.

The main difference between Semi-Dedi and Hyper-V is,

Windows Semi-Dedicated VPS is a virtual environment created using software virtualization (Virtuozzo) while Hyper-V is a hardware virtualization platform. You get dedicated RAM on a Hyper-V VPS and other resources similar to a physical dedicated server. Another major difference between the two is the operating system. Windows Semi Dedicated Server comes with Windows server 2003 OS while Hyper-V Windows VPS comes with Windows Server 2008 OS.

So, you will definitely get much stability with Hyper-V as compare to Semi-dedi.

You will definitely get good in fact, best performance on Windows 2008 machine. It is fast and more reliable than Windows 2003.

One thought - would it be possible to add these sql server options to the Hyper-V order process? Currently only Sql Server Express is an option.

Thanks, Justin

Hello Justin,

You can add extra requirements in Comments section.
If you wish we can add the charges for MSSQL in the same invoice or generate a separate invoice for it.

Sorry, another question:

Is SQL Server 2008 Standard available on Hyper-V? If so, what's the monthly cost?

Thanks, Justin

Yikes! Is it really £110 more expensive per month than 2005 Standard?

Thanks

Yes, SQL server 2008 licenses are comparatively quite expensive than SQL server 2005 licenses.

Thanks Ryan, but I think there's a mistake here somewhere? Your colleague quoted prices for SQL Server 2005 based on shared server prices, whereas your quote for 2008 is based on a dedicated server price?

As an aside, do you offer SQL Server 2008 Web Edition? Been looking at some of your competitors and they offer this for around $20-25 a month.

Thanks,

Justin

Hello Justin,

Hyper-V is a hardware virtualization platform. You get dedicated RAM on a Hyper-V VPS and other resources similar to a physical dedicated server.Hyper-V virtualize the physical server. The VZ server requires only a single installation of Windows, while on the hyper-v server each virtual server requires its own windows installation (and license).

We do not offer MSSQL 2005 Web Edition. You can install your own MSSQL license on VPS.
