Default SQL Server full-text searching with Windows VPS Hosting

I am looking to host a small-business website hosting and am wanting to use SQL Server 's full-text service to allow advanced text searching. I have been told that eUKHost provide full-text support as part of their WINDOWS VPS Hosting package.

However, looking at the Microsoft website hosting (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/ex...e/default.aspx) is appears you need the "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services" version to get Full-Text search.

Can anybody confirm which edition of SQL2005 Express is available on VPS Hosting?

Thanks,
Steve.

As far as I know SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is used on the Windows VPS Hostings but I'm not sure whether it is "with Advanced Services" or not.

One of the eUKhost team should be along shortly so I am sure they will be able to answer this query fully to you.

Hope that helps

SQL Server 2005 is something you have to install yourself. Considering that it's the free edition that you want then you can download it and I'm sure you'll be able to do it yourself.

Thanks for the reply flesso, I didn't realise we would be allowed to install software ourselves. I thought a database was provided as part of the package.

Flesso,

When I ordered a VPS Hosting in April, Support installed SQL Server Express for me, no extra cost.

Steve,

I can't say if the Full-Text search option is available from eUKHost, but as you say, Microsoft have made it available for the Express edition now (it wasn't available when Express was initially released).

Support are normally able to install things such as SQL Server Express if you ask them (nicely ) as they understand that sometimes people don't know how to do it or have difficulty doing things like that.

Steve,

Have you checked to see if the full text search feature is available?

Not sure whats going on....

The fulltext service IS running. It does appear to work as I can issue a query using a CONTAINS in the where clause, eg.

....where contains (itemdesc,'%ipod%')

and that work's okay...However using SQL Server Management Studio the full-text options do not appear. So I don't know how to manage them!!!

Congratulations on your new VPS Hosting SteveR!

At least the full text service is there but it does seem odd that SQL Server Management Studio doesnt see its there! Maybe support could help out? (either by contacting <a href="http://www.eukhost.com/vps-...a>@eukhost.com or starting a LiveChat on www.eukhost.com)

Ah, it turns out this is a 'feature' within SQLExpress-Advanced.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916784/en-us describes how you manage full text catalogs under Express edition. Basically you need to use the t-sql commands. Nice one!

Glad to see you worked it out in the end!
