Default VPS Hosting questions

Hi,

I'm almost sold on your services, but have just a few questions before I dive in since managing my own VPS Hosting is new to me. If you could clarify a few points I would be very grateful.

1. I'm thinking of starting with the L-VPS Hosting-01 package while I'm only hosting development work and low traffic sites. However, at some point it is very likely that I will need to upgrade to a semi-dedicated or dedicated server. I understand the actual transfer is very smooth, but is the environment going to be the same, so that if I can operate the L-VPS Hosting-01 I'll be at home with semi-/fully-dedicated servers?

2. Do I need a control panel or can I manage everything through the terminal? I'm comfortable with using a CLI for local development work, but don't know what would be involved when dealing with things like mail servers, monitoring resources, DNS, etc. A steep learning curve does not bother me, I just need to know if it is practical. My main motivation is to keep as much of the server software as open source as possible.

3. I have a solid understanding of security from the PHP application side of things, but know little about how to configure the server so that it is secure. Is this something I need to worry about? Will I be responsible for software updates of the OS, PHP, MySQL etc; also would I be responsible for configuring the software to make sure it is secure?

Thank you for your help,

Alan

Ans :- There's absolutely no difference in management of VPS Hosting, Semi-dedicated or Dedicated Server. You won't need any special skills to manage semi-dedicated or Dedicated if you manage to understand your VPS Hosting. We take care of migration and restoration of your website hostings when you upgrade your plan, so you won't need to bother about anything besides checking if everything got restored on new server as you want it to be.

Ans :- You should consider cPanel as it will save your time. You are into development so loosing your time in system administration won't help

Ans :- We will take care of initial security settings for your VPS Hosting. OS updates, PHP and MySQL updates will be performed from our side. We will configure all softwares to make sure they are safe. All you need to ensure is that you don't use outdated code in your PHP scripts as bad code invited hackers / crackers and we won't be responsible if they find loop holes in your PHP code.

Hi Alan,
I've gone from webhosting newbie to now running a VPS Hosting and Semi-Dedicated from eUK. The one piece of advice I would offer you is to get cPanel and WHM (they come together). cPanel allows individual users to manage their entire account themselves through a GUI without you needing to interfere. The backend of that is WHM where you can do updates for things with a few clicks. You can do it all by SSH but I find it's a load easier to see everything is update through a few screens in WHM.

Hi,

I eventually decided to take your advice and pay for cPanel and am glad I did. In the future I may stop using it, but it is good to use it like training wheels until I feel a bit more comfortable in the server environment.

Now off to listen to the latest Security Now episode which, in a beautiful moment of serendipity, is titled 'How DNS works'. I have much to learn.

Thank you both again for your advice,

Alan
