Default VPS L-01 Ready to take the Plunge !!

Hi All,

Thanks for all your comments of late. I'm now ready to take the plunge to order a VPS, and would welcome additional comments on my proposed plan of action.

Firstly a VPS is really overkill as I don't at present sell any webspace. I have 6 sites, the bulk of which are with one host. It is because of this hosts abysmal service of late that I am making the move. I shall only be marginally worse off and if I do sell some space on to family and friends later that will be reversed. The main aim is to have some control over events rather than be in the hands of someone else. Also this is a hobby not a money making enterprise and I welcome the chance of learning something new.

I propose to purchase A linux VPS 01 with cPanel and a new domain specifically for the DNS.

Three of the domains I own are with the hosting company I am leaving, I don't plan to alter this situation, is this wise ?

After configuring the VPS I hope to replicate the simple static sites on the VPS and after testing arrange for the domains to point to the new sites.

The main site is a PostNuke site with a couple of complicated modules and a hefty database. Once again the plan is to replicate this prior to altering the DNS records.

Finally there is a small commercial site hosted with another company to move. My contract with them runs out in June and the others are monthly.

As you can see there is no great time pressure and as a novice I hope to be able to amble along at my own pace.

I expect to contact eUKhosts sales on Friday morning to arrange purchase.

If anyone can see any problems with this approach I welcome comments.

Cheers Martyn

Sounds like a sensible plan to me. I would just check with the hosting company you're with currently that they allow nameserver entries to be pointed to servers which aren't there own.

It appears so, they do have a control panel with two transfer options, full outbound transfer request and one just resetting the nameserver addresses ie :-

Primary server host name
Primary server IP address
Secondary server host name
Secondary server IP address
Tertiary server host name
Tertiary server IP address

Is there any advantage / disadvantage in moving the billing to eUKhosts.

The advantage is you have everything in one place but if that doesn't phase you, I'd keep it where you are and just update the nameservers.
