VPS or Reseller
Hi all - perhaps I could get some advice.
I currently have a standard linux reseller package and, following a foolhardy offer at a family wedding in Mauritius to host a website for all the pictures, find I'm running out of diskspace (actually I have run out - but for some reason one of the sites only shows use of 82Mb in WHM even though when i look at disk space usage in cpanel it's used over 4000Mb!!!).
So my dilemma is - do I upgrade to the linux advanced reseller or do I go for a VPS?
Both are a similar price and both give me 15Mb of disk space
The VPS gives more bandwidth
I have to pay extra £5/month for cpanel/WHM with VPS
What other advantages do I get from the VPS package over the reseller one?
Any comments appreciated

It all depends on your personal requirements etc.
A VPS gives you a dedicated environment (exactly like a dedicated server - but you wont have as many recourses).
With a VPS, you can control all aspects of the server such as apache configuration, PHP configuration, and firewall configuration.
You can create reseller accounts and standard hosting accounts with a VPS.
Obviously, if you do not require this functionality, you can simply upgrade your reseller package - but this won't give you the flexibility of apache configuration etc.

Hey,
The single biggest advantage is root access - that too unrestricted!!! You get dedicated IP's along with the VPs itself. You need not order seperately. A regular reseller plan does not allow you to create another reseller plan. In a VPS, you may create your own reseller accounts from WHM.
Virtuozzo is a very handy tool. It allows you to reboot, re-install, backup & restore, repair & monitor resource usage all by yourself.
Each server node has not more than 15 VPS' created. So there is more resources to be used & a faster connection as well. More than all this, for a bit more, you get to use something which is as good as a server in itself.

With root SSH access to your own VPS you'd of course have more control than you'd have with a reseller account, However the basics like adding accounts, setting plan limits, etc. would almost be the same either way.

Yes, the advantages mentioned above sound like you should be going for a VPS and the extra resources would of course be welcome I imagine. But then it is down to your individual needs and whether you would think you would need or want these extra features .

most important feature is that you can sell reseller plans and you can sell shared hosting plans with unlimited space and bandwidth allocations.

That is useful - save me having to juggle everyone's limits each month
BTW is there a yearly price for the VPS (like the reseller) or is it just 12 x monthly rate?

With both plans you do get amazing technical support. I've just moved from a reseller account to a VPS and the support has been amazing helping me get settled in to a new environment. I can't praise them enough!

Since when were they 10 months in a year?...
I believe the correct price would be £248.00 for a year.

You get 2 months free / a discount when you pay for a year. Most hosts do that kind of thing.

One last (?) question - would I have to move servers again if I go for the VPS - I've just moved all my accounts to a new server (to get php5) and not sure I want to go through that trauma (getting all the nameservers changed) again.
Just thought of another question - one of my sites is SSL - I assume this will be OK. Will that use up one of the two dedicated IP addresses I get?
Thanks

Yeah. We will need to migrate your accounts once again if you wish to upgrade to VPS plan. there's no other way to get this done.
You can do one before moving to VPS, get private nameservers setup now and point all your domains to your prviate nameservers. you wont have any downtime in this process. once you have your private nameservers then you wont need to ask your customers to change their nameservers again. you may think of upgrading to a dedicated server in future so having private nameservers will be a huge advantage.

Does a private nameserver cost?

As far as I am aware the private nameservers are included in the plan with the VPS.

There are no additional charges for Private Nameservers on a VPS. You will get 2 Dedicated IP’s with the VPS which will be used to set-up private nameservers.

OK - it's time to jump in
Having thought about this for a while, and having been sidetracked by the offer of sharing a 'semi-dedicated' with another EUK customer, I have decided to go for a VPS of my own.
How do I go about this? Obviously I want to avoid too much downtime for my customers - there is bound to be some whilst all the DNS stuff gets sorted.
Also need to ensure the VPS server has php5 and is of a good spec.

Hi David,
Basically, if you contact the billing department and say you want to upgrade to a VPS, they should be able to help you. I've done a similar migration recently. Basically, support will set you up a VPS. You can then check things are working on it before migrating data across (support will do all of this for you). If you then get the A-Record on the current namesevers pointed to the new VPS IP, there should be no downtime although you may want to take sites offline during the migration to protect data but support can advise you better on that.
Pretty much, support do all the hard work and it's just working out when is the best time for you.
