Question VPS Security

Hi all

Still considering the purchase of a Linux VPS package I have been looking again at the getting started thread.

Quote:
The first thing most people do when they receive their VPS is make it secure against hackers and virus writers alike; an insecure VPS is a hackers playground since they could be able to install a rootkit on your VPS meaning that they would be able to gather data from it and run malicious applications in the background without you knowing. Once you have secured your VPS you are then able to go on to customizing it.
What actually does that statement mean ?

Hello,

When a VPS is first created it is basically a blank install that is just waiting to be customized. Certain security settings are already in place (depending on the control panel) but usually our VPS Team can make additional tweaks to make sure your VPS is properly secured.

Our VPS Team are available 24/7 and they will be happy to assist you with this.

Hi Martyn,
Like any computer, a VPS needs to be protected with security measures. These are basically making sure software running on them is up to date, the firewall is correctly configured and everything like that. The support team are able to do all of this for you if you're not sure what to do and we are always here on the forum if you're not sure about something.

I am considering a linux VPS with cPanel as that is what I am currently used to as purely an end user.

Is the firewall a function of the VPS install or do I have to install my own firewall ?

I'm sorry if these are basic questions but the move to a VPS is going to be a sharp learning curve.

Don't worry about asking questions Martyn! I went through the phase you are now a few months back and I was on to support a lot initially. Now I hardly have to go on as I've learnt a lot!

The firewall can be installed by support for you. If you're not familiar with SSH and command line, I would leave it to them. Once installed, the important software has a graphical interface which makes things easy to modify.

I know, I've been following your progress here !!

This is the beauty of these type of forums, If one person has a problem solved it can help other lurkerss. I've been lurking in the background for a couple of months now and feel I'm about ready to take the plunge.
