VPS Hosting to Semi Dedicated
Hi
I have a Linux CPanel \WHM VPS Hosting account with power VPS Hosting in the USA. I`ve been doing a number of fairly chunk Joomla based sites recently and have noticed that whilst support etc is exceptional, sadly the response from the servers is way too slow. The performance of the box is fine but ping responses aren`t great.
Anyway, I`m considering moving the sites to the UK to improve performance. Only 3 of the sites get any decent`ish traffic, being less than 10GB traffic per month and the other 20 or so I host are fairly low key.
Anyway, my question is, semi dedicated or VPS Hosting. The allure of 2GB of dedicated RAM as well as a server share of 4:1 is very very appealing.
Do any of the existing semi dedicated clients or forum members have an opinion they can give to assist me in my decision.
Much appreciated

I think this is an interesting one... I guess it depends where you see yourself going with your service in the future. If you want to add more on to the server then getting a semi-dedicated now would prevent a migration in the future. Alternatively, the semi-dedicated would provide a faster service for your current sites and if that is important then head that way.... Sorry to be vague but I think it depends a lot on where you want to go in the future and your current VPS Hosting spec.

Thanks for the reply Johnathan
The existing server is approx 18 months old, I can`t recall the CPU but it`s fairly decent, I have an allocated 768mb.,
I`m convinced that for ourselves the future is in web based application development or at least developing and hosting sites which have some fairly meaty requirements licke Tomcat, Java etc and less towards the traditional hosting.
I`ll consider it for a little bit but I suspect I`ll continue with the power VPS Hosting service for the less demanding sites and progressively transfer the others to a semi dedicated, at least that way I`ll have the option to decide on whether any future sites will be UK based or US based depending on how demanding they`re likley to be.
THinking ahead, if the semi dedicated was to become insufficient, would it be easy to grow within it. i.e. to a 3:1 or 2:1 ratio by me buying a 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter etc..........
In fact is that not another option that eUKhosts could add to their portfolio of semi dedicated offerings, effectively 1\4 sem dedicated, 1\2 semi dedicated, 3\4 semi dedicated or fully dedicated. It would be an easy setup.
Just a thought but any other opions would be very gratefuly received, especially from the eUKhosts staff.
THanks
Craig

I'm not sure how easy it would be to buy another quarter of the server as with only having 4 accounts on anyway, they're like to fill up pretty quickly.
If you got to the stage where you needed more resources, you'd pretty much have to go for a dedicated server.

OK, signed up for a new semi dedicated but so far I`m a bit disappointed with the way it`s been handled.
Like a number of us here I`ve been doing this hosting \ web development stuff for a few years so I`ve been with a few hosting companies. 8 years and 3 hosts so not too bad considering the number of years I`ve been at it. One of the moves was forced upon me as the company went bust.
Anyway, I think it gives me some basis for expressing my opinion about how EUK host handled the setup of my semi dedicated so far. I`m slightly disappointed but ever hopeful it`ll improve.
I ordered and paid for the server on Thursday at about 14:00, spoke with sales who advised that within an hour I`d receive a call to verify my existence etc and the server would be setup in 2-3 hours. I left it and awaited a call. 20:00 came about (thats 8 hours after I ordered it) and I hadn`t received the call, I thought I`d better chase it up. I did and they promised to phone me back immediately. Someone did and all was good, we were off and running. The server would apparently be up and running in 4 hours. It wasn`t, ultimately it took another 15 hours before I got the welcome mail with my details. All good now though, or at least I thought so.
Fantastico wasn`t installed correctly, and when I contacted support they said they`d re-install it. After an hour on livechat with them I had to go out and asked if they could mail me when it was finished and tested. Needless to say I came back 3 hours later and it appeared to work, no e-mail advising me of same though. At the time of ordering the server I also requested an additional IP and was routed to support, which I did, ordered it, paid for it, was advised it`d be assigned within an hour, it took 3 hours for me to receive an e-mail to say it had been done. I advised support that it wasn`t appearing in WHM as an assignable IP and they asked the user id \ domain I wanted it assigned to. I did this and they assigned it somehow, although it still doesn`t appear in WHM as an assignable IP.
I now have issues resolving the appropriate IP to the domain and am in the midst of a support chat. Although that`ll ultimately end up in a ticket being raised.
I`m really not having a go, and appreciate that the tech support guys are responsive and probably under some pressure but as I`ve only been a client for less than a week and the one area where good companies are differentiated from mediocre companies or even bad companies is the support given to clients and so far I`m not that encouraged.
Hopefully I`m just unfortunate and it`ll all settle into a groove.
Just my thoughts and I absolutely don`t bear a grudge.
Admins - feel free to move this to the testimonials are if you`d prefer.

Hi Craig,
Sorry to hear you've been having some issues with things. Support is normally very good with things so I'm a bit surprised. By posting things on here like this it allows eUKhost to improve.
With every new server there are always a few days of issues until the server is configured as you need it. I was the same but everytimi now works a treat.
Anyway, hope you get everything sorted soon.

I was indeed told to raise a ticket.
They "resolved" it closed it without telling me and guess what now it`s a complet and utter disaster.
Now nothing is resolving the way it should.
It should be simple. I have a subdomain which I want the principle WWW to resolve to. I fixed that myself last night by doing an alias on Apache. IT support get involved and all of a sudden nothing is resolving. Now I`m getting angry, very, very angry.
The web site hosting is dead and my clients, the web site hosting owners, are pissed off to put it mildly.
I want a manager or at least someone who knows what i`m talking about to deal with this.
Not even close

I suggest you email Nick or Mark about this. You will find their emails in footers on their posts on the forum. Alternatively open a ticket and say you want it looked at by a senior admin.

Thanks, I`ve just mailed Nick.
I`m feeling calmer now. Sadly the client isn`t.

Hello Craig,
DNS changes had propagated on my end, but I requested Nick to add double apache entry for your domain to get rid of this DNS propagation time.
Please check and let me know if everything looks perfect now.

Hi Mark
We`re very very close and to be honest I`m tempted to quit while I`m ahead.
The http://www.aye-tunes.com address resolves perfectly, the http://92.48.75.106/ also resolves perfectly.
The only issue we now appear to have is that the http://92.48.75.102/ also resolves to the aye-tunes site.
I suspect it`s not an issue and I`m tempted to leave well alone.
I needed the web site hosting to resolve against the additional 106 IP as I`m about to transfer the SSL for it from the old site, and as the SSL authorities won`t allow me to do it to a shared ip.
If you know why it`s resolving to the 102 address and can fix it then ideal but if not I`ll quit whilst I`m ahaead.
Thanks for the assistance of both you and Nick.

Actually I`m not sure as if you ping www.aye-tunes.com it still comes back as the 102 address, which means it`ll fail on SSL as the 102 address is shared.

Hello Craig,
I am not sure why your DNS cache is taking so long to show the changes. Your domain has propagated to .106 IP all over the world and you can verify same thing from http://centralops.net/co/DomainDossi...n=true&x=0&y=0
I think you need to clear your local DNS cache by rebooting your computer or run following command on command prompt :-
ipconfig /flushdns
I can understand your frustration but we have no control of your local machine so there's nothing that we can do unless your local DNS cache clears.

Hi Craig,
I hope that's got most of it sorted. The IP is resolving for me to .106. Can I ask who you're internet is with as that might give me more of an idea about propogation times and caches?

Hi
I`ve tried from two separate locations but both NTL, one domestic and one leased line.
In any event it`s now resolving aping of the www to the correct 106 address, at long last I think it`s sorted.
