wiki hosting
Hi.
I'm thinking about creating a wiki dedicated to a specialist subject. Although I have experience in editing wikis I have zero expertise in setting them up, and no programming expertise.
I would like to create something with a low initial cost but which could be easily upgraded should it be a success. My intention is to finance it by means of advertising using, for example, AdSense.
Consequently, my questions are:
* Would your web hosting be appropriate for such a wiki?
* How difficult would it be for a non-expert to set one up?
* Do you have any restrictions in respect of advertising?
* What is the cheapest entry route? - initially I imagine that I would be the only person editing the thing.
* Do you have an easy upgrade route?
Thanks.

Hello!
Would your web hosting be appropriate for such a wiki?
Yes, I suggest you purchase a linux shared hosting package. They start at just £22.99 a year. A linux shared hosting package will allow you to install wiki software such as MediaWiki hosting(the same software powering the wikipedia).
See UK Shared Cpanel Hosting | PHP MySQL Linux Web Hosting for more info
How difficult would it be for a non-expert to set one up?
You can request an eUKhost staff member to install the wiki software for you, I'm sure they'll be more than willing to help Alternatively, there are lots of dedicated users on these forums who are willing to offer their help
Do you have any restrictions in respect of advertising?
Nope, not at all
What is the cheapest entry route? - initially I imagine that I would be the only person editing the thing.
The linux shared hosting plans should be sufficient for your specification. I recommend Plan 1. See UK Shared Cpanel Hosting | PHP MySQL Linux Web Hosting for more info
Do you have an easy upgrade route?
Yes, should you need to upgrade, you can do this at any time by contacting a staff member.
Good luck! Hope I was helpful

Don't forget there is also wiki software available from Fantastico on the Linux plans that will install and configure the wiki software in 3 easy clicks .

My word. Sounds almost too easy.
What are the payment options?
I live in Spain - but I take it that this won't cause any difficulties?

Nope, shouldn't cause any problems.
I normally find PayPal is the easiest method - if you've got a Paypal account its a couple of clicks and enter your username and password and your all done. Even if you don't have a Paypal account you can use either your debit or credit card via Paypal but it does take a few minutes longer.
Hope that helps .

Well, for some reason Paypal didn't want to process my payment using my Spanish references - I assure not because of any funds problem at my end. Then it didn't like my UK credit card. (These problems seem to turn up from time to time when you're an ex-pat.)
So I ended up making a transfer using my on-line banking account in the UK. All of which messing about took up some time and reduced my tolerance a little. Not your problem of course.
Your helpful salesperson passed me to accounts, who didn't seem quite so cooperative, or perhaps I was still angry with paypal. Still, I suppose it's their job to ensure people have paid - but having spent quite a while swearing at Paypal for not recognizing my accounts I wasn't really in the mood for further hastle.
The upshot is that we're waiting 48-72 hours for the payment to be received at your end. Still , gives me more time to plan the project.

Hi Site.
Thanks for the welcome. I must say that this generally seems a very friendly place. I hope the technical support people are up to the same standard when I come to set things up. If they are then I'll certainly be singing your praises.
A quick forum question. Quick reply doesn't seem to work for me. Any reason why not? I'm on Windows Vista (presumably I did something evil in a previous life) and Firefox.

Hi Bob,
You will have similar experience with our support team as well our billing team. We switched our billing system on sunday which has overloaded our billing department, they should be comfortable now as things are back to normal.
regarding your forum question, quick reply is not working for me as well. None of us noticed this till now, but I will get it sorted from our developers in the morning.

I have just been clicking it and it doesn't function for me. "Quote post" does though - as I've just used it to reply to you.
Some cool smilies though.

Sorry about this everybody. I thought that clicking "Quick Reply" would generate a text box to fill in. I was just playing with explorer when I noticed that what it does is allow editing in the box below.
So sorry about that.

Actually somebody might want to consider changing the text in the box to read "to activate this quick reply box." in case other intellectually challenged users come along.
