Default Windows VPS Hosting

Hi,

I'm considering using Windows VPS Hosting for hosting a Kentico CMS based website hosting, which requires Full Trust.

Will the W-VPS Hosting-01 plan be available on 15th March, as advertised?

Is there a relative measurement for stating how VPS Hosting performance might compare with Shared Hosting performance, on Windows?

I read this about VPS Hosting elsewhere:
"Virtual Servers (VPS Hosting) are ideal if you have just outgrown normal shared hosting, are looking for experience on how to operate your own server, or if you just need 'root' shell/SSH access."
The "looking for experience on how to operate your own server" bit caught my attention, as it suggests that I may need to be involved with the running of the website hosting on a continual basis. Is this true, and what does it involve? URLs for online FAQs or relevant articles would be appreciated, to help me understand the consequences of using VPS Hosting. What level of support is available from Eukhost?

(With shared hosting, once the website hosting is up and running, I would have expected to forget about it, until my client requests design changes, but shared hosting is not an option for this particular website hosting.)

James

Hi James,

Yes, Windows VPS Hosting Plans would be available from the 15th of March 2007, as advertised.

VPS Hosting is basically a managed server except the server resources are distributed between multiple users. On a VPS Hosting you will have full root access to run server level tasks and the ability to restart services and your apache server if necessary. Each VPS Hosting performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server.

Shared hosting - There are many clients on a single server and they share the resources of a web server so it is limited to managing your own account.

VPS Hosting is your best bet at the moment as you are in an isolated environment which is technically more reliable than Windows Shared hosting.

You can refer to articles on our Blog http://blog.eukhost.com and VPS Hosting category in our knowledgebase http://www.eukhost.com/support/knowl...rivate-servers for more information.

After you sign up, you won’t need to bother about security settings of your VPS Hosting nor you will need to worry about the updates and patches as we have our technical support staff members to take care of those on monthly basis. We are here 24×7 and we will help you with everything you need on your VPS Hosting.

Ryan,

"On a VPS Hosting you will have ... the ability to restart ... your apache server if necessary." I presume you mean Windows IIS Web Server in may case?

I noticed this in the KnowledgeBase:
"In case of VPS Hosting you get dedicated RAM so you cannot run Memory intensive website hostings on a VPS Hosting." Perhaps this refers to large ecommerce website hostings.

The charity website hosting is expected to be low traffic, but since it is based on a CMS, there will be no static pages (except for default.aspx), as the content for all pages is generated dynamically from an SQL Server database. Does this put it in the 'memory intensive' category, and so unsuitable for VPS Hosting?

I'm unclear about hosting multiple website hostings on a VPS Hosting - can one client run more than one website hosting from his VPS Hosting? This would be useful for my client, who has a second website hosting hosted elsewhere, but I know he is unhappy with that host.

Is there extra cost involved for the client? If not, then VPS Hosting would be more affordable, if both website hostings ran from the same VPS Hosting.

The second website hosting uses (Classic) ASP, mostly static pages, with some pages getting data from an Access database. In general, I don't see ASP mentioned for your Windows plans, only ASP.Net. Is ASP available? Also, many hosts supporting ASP also offer a range of ASP components - does Eukhost offer any?

The Windows VPS Hosting page lists features on the left, but this list is probably incomplete (as ASP.Net is missing) - which page gives a complete feature list for Windows VPS Hosting.

Yes, Apache server in case of Linux VPS Hosting and IIS Web Server in case of Windows VPS Hosting.

Memory intensive website hostings mainly refers to proxies, video uploads and downloads and video sharing website hostings, large e-commerce website hostings etc.

There shouldn't be a problem with your website hosting hosted on a VPS Hosting with regards to memory.

You can host as many domains as long as resources are available on your VPS Hosting without any extra charge.

Yes, ASP is available and you will be able to host website hosting using classic ASP. We will also be able install any ASP components you require.

ASP, ASP.NET have been added to the Windows VPS Hosting features list.

Let me know if you have any doubts or further queries.

Ryan,

Thanks for your patience - I do have further questions.

The details of service level agreements (like “99.9% Uptime Guarantee”) can be difficult to understand. Is eUKhost’s fully explained on a specific page of your site?

In considering VPS Hosting over Shared hosting, are there any additional responsibilities the customer will have, which wouldn’t normally apply with shared hosting? I didn’t find informatin about this among the page references you gave me previously.

I guess eUKhost monitors the Internet connection, and the server hardware and software, but what about each customer’s VPS Hosting? Because its possible for me to reboot the VPS Hosting, does that imply that I have to somehow monitor the VPS Hosting and the website hosting it runs, and take corrective action myself (which for Shared hosting eUKhost might otherwise do)?

Do you recommend any external services for monitoring the website hosting, to notify me if it’s down?

The website hosting domain is purchased and hosted elsewhere (just a one page website hosting currently). I would like to be able to test the completed website hosting (CMS-based, with SQL Server) on a eUKhost VPS Hosting before transferring the domain. Assuming a VPS Hosting plan is purchased and paid for, can you provide a temporary (or pre-DNS) URL for testing purposes? Will any restrictions apply to this?

James

The complete details of eUKhost's Service Level Agreement can be found here http://www.eukhost.com/sla.php

All our VPS Hosting plans are Managed VPS Hosting, so you don't need to worry about any additional responsibilities, security settings, updates and patches as we have our technical support staff members to take care of those on monthly basis. We are here 24×7 and we will help you with everything you need on your VPS Hosting.

If you need to reboot the VPS Hosting at anytime or you wish to know the status of your VPS Hosting, you will need to contact our VPS Hosting support team via live chat or email.

We can provide you a temporary URL for testing purposes but you will have to purchase a control panel with your VPS Hosting.

Hello James,

Our responsibility is to keep the shared servers, reseller servers, Managed dedicated servers & VPS Hosting nodes up and running with minimum uptime of 99.95% but VPS Hosting customers should contact our VPS Hosting support team on weekends to get security settings updated on their VPS Hosting and enable monitoring services for their VPS Hosting.

We wont be responsible if your VPS Hosting gets hacked due to poor security settings so you need to ensure that you contact our VPS Hosting support team once in 2 - 3 months to update security settings. Rest is assured that you will get more than 99.95% uptime if you love your VPS Hosting and like to spend some time with our support team for its security.

Both of you assure me of the excellent support from eUKhost, and I've no reason to doubt that!

I assume what you say about having security settings checked monthly would apply to Shared hosting also.

What I was trying to determine was if, once up and running, a VPS Hosting in particular requires extra monitoring or attention from me, which might not be the case with Shared hosting. My client probably assumes I would have no further involvment with the website hosting or hosting, other than occasional web website hosting changes, if he requests them.

Ryan, when you say "If you need to reboot the VPS Hosting at anytime ...", I presume you mean a situation where I knowingly wish to do that, rather than a need due to a fault which I would not otherwise be aware of. That's why I asked about recommending an external service for monitoring the website hosting, to notify by email if the website hosting is unavailable.

By the way, I had email notificatin this morning of a reply posted in this thread (not a PM) from a Ben of eUKhost, but I don't see his post here!

Ben is a client of eukhost and an active member of our forum. You got the email notification because he had posted a reply to this thread and later he himself deleted his post so you are not able to see his reply.

Hello James,

You will get Virtuozzo power panel to reboot your VPS Hosting from your end if you need to do so after installation of some softwares or anything else.

If there is any hardware problem or anything else which results in downtime then our VPS Hosting team will send email notification and our phone support team will call you if the downtime is expected to exceed time frame of 10 - 20 minutes.

We try to keep our customers informed in case of any problem as its next to impossible to give 100% uptime for 12 months in a row. Certain problems do occur but most of the times we track them before they result into downtime.
