Default A bit confused about Horde email : Advice plz?

Hi,

A customer I recently completed a website hosting for has been using an email address I set up for him in cPanel and configured on his PC system withinhis Outlook 6.0.

I mentioned to him that he could also use Horde email to check for messages.

He now informs me he would rather use Horde email to check for messages so they are all kept in the same place.

I was under the impression that any email sent to the email address tied to that domain would also end up in Horde?. Or is that not correct?.

Is there a way to have it so he can keep the email address I set up for him in my cPanel and configured on his machine within Outlook, but also use for him to use Horde to read his email in there?.

I've sent a couple of test emails to his email address and rather than look in Outlook, have went straight to Horde and signed in there as him, but there are never any messages in it?.

Advice appreciated!!

Still trying to get my head around this.

If I send an email to an address on the domain and it comes into Outlook, It also sits in the inbox within Horde.

If I open the email and read it within Outlook, it vanishes from the inbox in Horde. I assume that is correct?.

But if I go to Horde first and open the email in the inbox in there and read it, I thought it would be stored within Horde?. Upon opening an email in Horde, reading it and then logging out, then logging back in, the email is no longer in the inbox in Horde. In fact, the email isn't anywhere now within Horde!!

Do you have to manually create a new folder ad manually move the emails from Horde's inbox into a new folder called say "My domain" in order to store emails in Horde?.

Sorry, I'm just getting confused. Obviously always known Horde was there to be used, but this is the first client that has decided they would rather use Horde than Outlook and I'm really not that well up on it all and how it all works.

I suspect your problem is that you are configuring Outlook (or leaving it by default) to auto-delete mail following a POP3 collection?

Go into the OL account's advanced settings, like Tools > Account Settings > Change Email Account window, select 'More settings' button > select 'Advanced' tab > Delivery option, set to 'Leave a copy of messages on the server' (note: this path may vary depending on OL version).

Give that a try first and report back ...

Thanks, will give that a try and see if it stores emails in Horde.

Following that advice, does that mean that even if he opens a message on his PC via Outlook, it will remain as a copy on Horde?.

Well it always has for me! Once Outlook connects, collects and disconnects, it deletes the mail it collected as it departs the server, unless you specifically set Outlook to keep messages on the server. Horde is oldhat, SquirrelMail is neolithic — have you looked at RoundCube yet? Is it on your server?

Off at a tangent now, are you still hosting all your sites on subdomains? If so, it's about time you did the sensible thing and opened a reseller account!

Yes m8, still using addon domains, working well so far but resellers is something I'm considering moving to shortly.

I do have Roundcube on the server, to be honest, I'll leave it up to the client to decide what webmail app to use, although I have no idea why someone would want to use any of the webmail apps instead of Outlook!!

I assume if I tick the box "Remove from server when deleted from deleted items" it means exactly that - tha a copy of the mail will be left on the server, viewable within Horde until it is deleted from Horde itself?

I've never tested that Delivery setting in Outlook but would agree with your assessment.

Perhaps your customer wants to use WebMail because they're behind a corporate firewall most of the time at the office and can't use Outlook there for their personal stuff, or even simply that they don't have a copy of Outlook (which isn't free) — there are many possible reasons, but in any case as they're intent on using WebMail, I suggest you mention RoundCube as it's fresh and easy to use.

I manage a very large number of personal email accounts and use Thunderbird in IMAP mode (on 2 PCs) as a quick visual tool for multiple mailboxes, then split what I collect by POP3 into two different Outlook PSTs (on 2 PCs), one of which has open archives for each year going back to 1998 — yes, 10 years of searchable emails! Not everyone hoards mail like this (pun intended)!

As for upgrading to a Reseller account, don't you presently find it limiting and/or face criticism from your customers that they cannot login to a control panel and manage their own domains?

Sorry, but I realise I misinterpreted what you asked — no, 'deleted from deleted items' means within Outlook i.e. you must either delete an already deleted message or shift+delete an undeleted message (permanent removal) to then have it removed from the server upon the next POP3 session, otherwise all messages remain on server. You can remove any/all messages you want from the server using Horde/SquirrelMail/RoundCube at any time and, if before a POP3 collection has been initiated, obviously those messages will have already been deleted.
