Question Dedicated SSL on "Linux Hosting Packages"

Dear all,

I'm trying to make sense of how dedicated SSL would work on a Linux Hosting Package and instead of submitting endless emails to the support guys I thought I'd ask here.

So far I have been able to gather the following:
  • Dedicated SSL requires a dedicated IP address for £20 per year.
  • I have this option upon purchase.
  • I should then be able to use an SSL certificate.

Here are my questions:
  • What do I do with my certificate.cer / cert.crt files? Do I upload these to cpanel?
  • Will subdomains have ssl too? I would have expected another certificate would be needed, how would I add this?
  • Would this require a dedicated IP too?
  • Will all pages that are available under http be available for https?
  • Is it possible as it is on IIS Web Server to restrict some pages to SSL only via the server? The workaround for this would be a PHP script, just enquiring.

Basically I'm trying to understand if something like https://login.mysitename.co.uk is possible as well as https://www.mysitename.co.uk and what the requirements are to set this up. Also, if I use dedicated SSL can I submit any certificate including temporary ones generated with OpenSSL for testing purposes?

Thanks for your time, anything you can provide to explain how this works would be great, I couldn't find an SSL option for cpanel in your (excellent) flash tutorials hence the need to ask.

Any help would be great,

Antony

1. I think if you buy the certificate of eUKhost and your website hosting is hosted here Support will install your certificate for you if you ask (and I think they do it automatically on purchase of the certificate).
2. As I understand it your top domain and any subdomain under it can be configured to use the certificate. I base this on the fact that the shared SSL can be used on all of your website hosting, subdomains and pages.
3. You would only need 1 dedicated IP address for the certificate.
4. All the pages underneath the main domain would be available to be configured with the SSL certificate as far as I know.

Not sure about your last question. You will have to wait for someone else. I am 90% sure on my answers above and have only intended them as a guide until someone who knows for sure can confirm this.

Hope that helps .

Hi DPS Computing,

Thanks for your quick response. I know there is a php function for checking the existence of SSL connections, getenv("server_port") would do it, which is what I shall do should this turn out not to be possible.

I'll wait until someone can confirm what you've said - I would have assumed if one has a certificate for mysite.co.uk then subsite.mysite.co.uk should work too, but I don't know hence my questions!!

I'm not currently hosting my website hosting anywhere, I'm investigating packages and eUKhost offer by far the most feature-filled, cost effective solution I've seen.

Anyway, thanks again for your assistance, I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Antony

No problems. I am very confident on my answers I just wouldn't want you to buy something due the answers I have given and then my answers not be 100% correct.

Glad to have been able to help .

SSL Certificate signed for mysite.co.uk will work for sudomain.mysite.co.uk but you will get a popup warning saying that the certificate has been registered for mysite.co.uk and the URL in the browser is not certified.

You will need to purchase another certificate for subdomain.mysite.co.uk and we will need to assign another dedicated IP to the subdomain.

Ah right, thanks for clearing that one up for me in my mind also. I suppose thats why we get warning signing in securly to cPanel and stuff like that then because the main address is licensed but all our sub addresses arn't inidividually licensed by default.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I take it assigning another dedicated IP will cost another £20 per year? I take it the need for dedicated IPs is not just a limiting feature of cPanel?

I have taken a look at the options and buying several IP addresses from yourselves works out cheaper than every equivalent hosting plan. Fantastic! Thanks again,

Antony

Yes, as you would need a dedicated IP to make the certificate work as far as I know as they can't be applied to a shared IP address otherwise it wouldn't be dedicated SSL.

Hope that helps

Sorry for the late reply. The SSL FAQ (http://www.eukhost.com/support/knowl.../category/ssl/) says:

"We offer dedicated SSL certificate for £39 per year. Dedicated IP is free if you purchase the SSL certificate from us."

I didnt realise that - ah thats good isn't it!

Does that count for every time you renew the certificate then? or is it just a first year offer?

Dedicated IP is free as long as you renew the SSL Certificate from us. If you have third party SSL Certificate then you need to pay for IP address.

Sounds great, that makes sense. And sound pretty great. Your service is the best! Because other hosting companys charge an additional fee for the ip address, whereas you guys provide the ip address for free as long as the ssl is not a third partys!

Thank You very much because I had the same question for you.
