Default Hosting Controller / Plesk Control Panel

Hello,

I have signed up for a windows hosting account, currently I have the Hosting Controller control panel however I was under the impression I would be getting plesk?

I cant seem to find a way of password protecting a folder with multiple usernames and passwords in hosting controller?

Would anyone be able to let me know the differences between hosting controller and plesk, Support said I can raise a ticket to be changed but i wondered what the advanatges / disadvantages were ?

When creating a new website hosting i also get the option of IP-Based (Select an IP Address) or shared. Could someone also explain what the difference is as when i select shared, i still get an IP address that was listed under "IP-Based"

Cheers,

Craig

Hello Craig,

Hosting Controller is many times better than plesk when it comes to stability. Plesk has some additional features in comparison with hosting controller but disaster recovery in plesk is difficult and we have been through it couple of times.

We have automated backups for hosting controller servers and restoration takes less than an hour in case there's any problem with the hardware of server of something goes wrong.

I'll have one of our windows system admins to reply to this thread with steps to password protect directories.

Thank you for the prompt reply, I'm just wondering - what are the aditional features? I like the idea of my current control panel being more robust but am wondering if I will miss any of the features in the future as the description of the windows hosting is based around plesk on your main website hosting.

Cheers,

Craig

Hello Craig,

Password protected web directories are those which require a user login name and password when accessed from the web through a web browser.

To create a password protected directory, follow these steps:
Quote:
1. Login into control panel as WebAdmin, click Domains, click List Web Sites and select website hosting under which the password protected directory is needed.

2. Click Virtual Dir. button, click Add Virtual Dir. button. Select the folder path in Physical Path box, hit Expand button and browse until you reach the folder which is needed to secure,e.g. something.com/www/protectme/.

3. Enter a directory name in Alias for Virtual Directory box, e.g. 'protected'. Select No from Allow Anonymous radio box (No is selected by default) and click Add Virtual Directory button.

The above procedure will create a virtual directory 'protected' pointing to the folder something.com/www/protectme/. You may then access the directory as
http:// something.com/protected . Because anonymous access is denied, therefore when this URL is accessed, the browser will prompt for login and password and only the user given ACL access on the physical directory will be allowed to login.
Please refer the following links for more detailed features of the hosting controller Control Panel. You'll notice that this one is far better than Plesk.

Hi,

Thanks for your response, all makes sense now, I did look at the ACL however I noticed my account seems to have a limit of only 6 allocated FTP users (which seems to be the users that appear on the ACL however i just dont assign them permissions to the actual ftp website hostings to be secure).

I was under the impression i receive unlimited FTP accounts after looking at http://www.eukhost.com/windows-features.php

I have opened a ticket regarding this (Ref: FGK-86274-43 as I will probably need more than 6 accounts.

Am i right in thinking the ACL looks at the FTP users ? or can i create users somewhere else?

Cheers,

Craig
