PostgreSQL on Windows / Linux

Hi,

I have a .NET 1.1 application that uses PostgreSQL as the backend database that I would like to get hosted.

I already have a Linux (silver) account on your servers which I use to host some php website hostings. (Great service btw )

I've read on another post on this forum that you are able to offer a PostgreSQL databases to linux shared hosting customers but not with windows shared hosting....

I wonder if it would be possible for me to get a windows shared hosting account and "connect" it to the PostgreSQL server from my Linux account ?

Hello Simon,

It wont be possible to remotely connect to PGSql server from windows hosting account as Server running SQL Server service runs out of RAM incase of Remote data connections.

I don't see any other option besides a Dedicated server as VPS Hosting will have similar RAM problems for remote data connections.

Right now I'm not sure I want to invest in a dedicated server, so I might have to consider plan B: porting my database code to SQL2005 ...

If there's not any specific reason to choose PGSql then its better to go with MSSQL 2005. some people do say that PGSql is quite good but it should be friendly with servers as well as it doesn't go well in shared hosting environment.

Actually, I do have a good reason for wanting to use PostgreSQL..,

The 1, 000's of lines of code that I've already written to interface with it

I guess this explains why mySQL is so popular. Better for a shared hosting environments ...

Yes, it does make it the popular choice as due to the decrease in system requirements it is cheaper to obtain a server that will run it as well as more reliable as it uses less system resources and causes less downtime as well as putting less strain on the server.
