For me, the user friendliness puts vBulletin head and shoulders above the rest and after 10 years of using forums and forum software I have had quite a bit of experience with them!

$169 per year for Vbulletin license. You can continue to use VBulletin after 1 year without paying for renewal but then they wont allow you to upgrade your forum to any of their latest versions.

And how many updates are there a year? Do you not even get security updates / fixes for free?

As per my knowledge they keep on releasing new version every month. For the first year all updates and patches are free. After that you wont get any sort of updates no matter if its a security update or general update.

Ah right thats interesting to know. At least you get quite a few updates for your money. Do you still update this forum every month with the update? Or are the not really that many changes every month?

The forum would be updated on patch releases but if it's a general release I don't think they need to update the version. This forums version is 3.6.0 but the latest vBulletin version is 3.6.7 PL1.

So I would assume a patch release is basically a security or bug updates and a general release would be everything else such as feature update etc?
