When you get started with installation of forum you will need to upload the forum files in your webspace. Make sure that first you setup a MySQL Server database then add and assign a database username to it. You will need to make necessary changes in the config.php or configuration.php file of the installation and put the database details in it.

Once you upload the files through FTP you will need to proceed to the installation section after reading the readme or help documentation that came with the forum package.

It wont be possible for you to complete the installation if you don't read the help documentation that came with the forum package.

A good forum I would go for is PunBB, It is an open sorce free forum.
The comunity there is nice and helpful for new users.
Easy to set up.
Just upload the files, Fill out the form with your Database information on it, Then click submit.
Then you need to create a new file in your root directory (were all your files for your forum are kept), called config.php and put in the information that the install form gives you and you are done.
It is really very simple.
If you are interested in this Forum, Go to www. punbb.org

FTP connects you directly to the file system on the remote computer. It's as if you had opened the file manager on the remote, on to your local computer. It will allow you to transfer to and from the remote, and make changes to files on the remote, like renaming and deleting.

If you are on Windows, have a look at CuteFTP or FilleZilla for free software. If you can afford it I recommend FTP Voyager from RhinoSoft, or WS-FTP from Ipswitch. On Linux I use GFtp which seems to be the best.

For simple work, the File Manager on your cPanel remote control will do the same. You can even do simple file editing with it, to files on your server.
