Domain Name/url .. Need help .. read on (detailed)

This is pretty complexed and i dont know how to do it ive done it before but me being me ive forgotton how so ill try to explain what i want done as detailed as possible.

In the address box for example i have a domain www.abc123.com/index.html lets say that as an example , and when i go into contact page it goes to www.abc123.com/contact.html

so people can easily get into those pages ..

i want to remove the /index.html and hide those for any other page so when i look at the website its always [url=http://www.abc123.com]abc123.com, even when i click contact page it stays as .com only ..

or is there a way of stopping people entering pages by editing the url because when the site is down for maitenance i dont want anyone having access into any of it.
