Default Installing a forum using phpBB on asp.net web site

Hi,

I realise I am being somewhat stupid but I need a step by step guide on how to get the forums working on my website hosting.I just wanted to set up forums using phpBB.

I have an asp.net website hosting, and in my control panel I created a forum and database for it. However if I click on the link it just comes up page not found. I tried creating a forum folder and copying phpBB files into it but again I get nowhere. I also noticed that there were a load of phpBB files sitting in the /special folder of my web website hosting but I don't know what they are for.

I have enabled php on my website hosting also.

If anyone can help a dumbo like me it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Colin

Does the server you are on support PHP?

This is a requirement for phpBB.

I find it difficult to find out what your problem is from this post, but if you need help, I can install it for you if you like as a kind gesture.

PM me if your interested.

Thanks for the quick reply. If I go to the script manager in my website hosting I can enable asp, perl and php so I presumed it was supported.

Ok, have you uploaded all of the phpBB files, if so, in what directory?

I had uploaded them but I had no idea if i was meant to put in a specific folder or where. Does it matter or shoudl I just create a folder anywhere and stick them there. Also I noticed a version was already on my web space in the special folder.

Was in the same boat recently.

If you have Fantastico in your Cpanel, it can install and get you up and running in a few easy steps as far as phpBB forums go.

If you are not running Fantastico, please ignore me, sorry!!!

If its coming up with page not found when you try and go to the URL of your address then there is something wrong with the index(.php) file - a 404 error only happens when the page is actually missing as opposed to their being something wrong with the installation.

I tried to resolve this error over MSN last night and everything was done correctly, so the fact this error is being returned is quite strange.

I'm guessing it might be a permissions error.

If this is a host with a layered Control panel, its harder to install. These control panels dont have the third CHMOD public setting making it hard for people to write stuff to the folders.

But regardless of the permissions if the file exists it shouldn't return a 404 error. That would return a 403 error if that was the case.

You can open a ticket for our windows support team from our helpdesk http://support.eukhost.com and ask them to get the permissions sorted for you. This would be easiest option as here you may go round in circles without any solution. They have Administrator access to the server so they can help you quickly.

Depends what type of mood the server is in, and if the server has permission to communicate with the file it's trying to request. If it isn't allowed to communicate with the server, the server will think it's not there and produce a 404.

If servers start doing that then things will be difficult for us as its already much difficult to handle mood of system admins working on servers

I bet - the server is having quite severe problems if its spitting out 404s due to permission errors.

Not really :P It could simply the permissions are set so that the server cant read the file, so it doesn't know its there, so you would probably expect it to throw out 404's.

Oh right - I thought if the server didnt have the permissions to read a file it would still give a 403 error though?
