Default Site/document indexing

Before I purchased a hosting package, I posted a message asking whether site/document indexing was accessible via PHP so that I can adapt a website hosting search to include my clients PDFs/Word docs/PowerPoint files etc.

I was informed that it can be done, but how?

Thanks in advance

can you explain me in brief of what exactly you wish to achieve ?

If you can provide me with some examples then I'll have someone to give you steps to implement similar functionality.

Hi

Right, I've found an email from Shane who replied to my query that went along the lines of...

Quote:
"We have a client who wishes to have PDFs, Word documents, and PowerPoint files searchable on their website hosting - i.e. their content indexed so that they appear in serach results.

Do you have indexing for this and is is accessible via PHP scripting?"
He replied:

Quote:
1) Our Servers support PHP(4.4.4 - default) as well as MySQL(4.1++) (Unlimited MySQL Databases) , definitely in this situation Linux would be the best suggestive for indexing. Here are the links -

a)http://www.eukhost.com/packages.php

b)http://www.eukhost.com/<a href="http...</a>_linux.php

c)http://www.eukhost.com/dedicated.php

The above mentioned links are in relation to your requirements and budget, however all of the above are best suitable for indexing.

2) Also, is this index is easily accessible via PHP scripting (i.e. can it be integrated into their current search script)?
Ans. The index will be accessible through PHP scripting.
Now that I have purchased the hosting (Linux Gold), I need to start to update my CMS search script (written in PHP that currently searches the MySQL database for results) to also search the searchable index of the PDF/Word/PowerPoint files.

I also have no idea how to control this indexing i.e. to point it to index one folder etc...

Thanks in advance

The following script may be of interest to you:

http://www.celerondude.com/php-indexer

It is a simle PHP file-indexing script, that allows all the files in whichever directories specified to be listed. Of course, some file and folder reorganisation may have to be done in order to successfully integrate the script.

A demo can be viewed here:

Thanks for the response, but I'm actually after the content of PDFs, Word docs and PowerPoint files indexed into a searchable index file (like Microsoft Index Server) so that if somebody searches the website hosting for 'Chapter 1 - Indexing' then it will display a link to the relavant PDF/Word doc that contains that text...

Do you want those to be searchable in Search Engines or you need an option on your website hosting for visitors to type in a search box and search ?

I already have the website hosting search script (php) on the CMS that searches the MySQL database, but my client requires their PDFs etc, to also be included in website hosting searches at a website hosting level - not from a search engine.

So the PHP search script would need to be updated to search the database AND an index file of the file contents of a documents directory (which contains the PDFs/Word doc/PowerPoint files). Hmmm, make sense?

Edit your signature for this forum from usercp and put link to your website hosting in the signature. Your website hosting will be indexed in google in next 3 - 4 days.

I apologise pphilpot; I don't believe I fully read or understood your ogirinal question. I'm afraid that your request is beyond my capabilities, but I'll be sure to ask around for you and see if I can find someone who can help you to figure something out.
