Default transferring website from 123-reg to eUKhost

Hi.

Recently purchased the Platinum package here.

I'm a complete beginner at this to be honest. I previously had a basic hosting package with 123Reg and registered my first domain name with them and purchased webspace for it.

When it came to uploading my finished website, it was just a case of either using their control panel or as I am at present using Namo Web Editor, just going to "Publish Site" within it, whacking the ftp details in for 123Reg and away you go.

Now, I appreciate that this hosting package is far more powerful and complex and thats where I'm falling over.

So if anyone can help me out on some very basic questions I would appreciate it.

Here we go.....

So......I've got a website ready to publish and upload.

Its sat on my hard drive in my "My Documents" folder. For the sake of argument its in a folder called "Robins".

I go to my cPanel and go to the file manager, create a file called "Website1" and click on "Upload file". I select the "Robins" folder containing the website and upload it to the "Website1" folder.

I also have CuteFTP and have tried doing it via this as well.

Anyway, it uploads ok and its there in my File Manager screen.

The website in the "Robins" folder, now in the "Website1" folder is called www. indagatio.co.uk

The domain has been registered with 123Reg.

And here's where the newbie question comes in.

Its registered as a domain name ( with 123Reg ), its uploaded to my hosting here but when I type in www. indagatio.co.uk, it takes me to the 123Reg website and tells me that the name has already been registered by a user. It does not show me the website.

So I'm guessing I'm missing a HUGE chunk here and I'm not doing something that I should be doing. I'm also guessing that its something to do with pointing the DNS at the hosting etc?. I need advice on that also if thats the case.

I have went into my cPanel and "Parked" the domain of indagatio.co.uk there. I notice it tells me that domain names need to be registered ( which it is ) and also:-

Quote:
In addition, they will not be functional unless they are configured to point to our DNS servers.
How do I go about doing that, in plain English??!!!.

To be honest, what I am looking for is not only snippets of advice on all of the above, but ideally if someone could take me through the whole thing from start to finish as far as getting a folder on my hard drive with the relevant html files in it, uploaded to my hosting here and then going through the steps to getting it up and running so that when I type in www. indagatio.co.uk to my browser, it pops up with my website.

I realise that these are all very basic questions and some of you may well be thinking "What the hell!!!......this guy is a complete idiot!!!". But then we all have to start somewhere, dont we???.....LOL!!!.

I would seriously appreciate the assistance. I've been banging my head of my desk for hours now and its getting me nowhere.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Gaz.

On 123 Reg you will need to go to the domain control panel, i assume they have one, and enter the DNS details provided in the signup e-mail that euk sent you.

This will be something like:

ns15.eukdns.com
ns16.eukdns.com - Just and example

Depending on registra, this can take 24 - 48 hours for these changes to take effect and your website to show.

Thanks, I will give that a go and report back.

Do I just input in 123Reg's control panel the :-

ns15.eukdns.com

or do I also need to add the IP address numbers that are contained within the sign up email sent to me?.

You just need too put the nameservers. You dont need to put the IP address.

Ok, think I have managed that in the 123Reg control panel.

I went to "Web forwarding" and entered the DNS name in my sign up email.

I uploaded the folder called "indagatio" containing the html pages etc of the website to my hosting.

Now when I type in www. indagatio.co.uk to my browser, it brings up this page:-

Is that just because it can take between the 24-48 hours mentioned to propogate or have I made yet another mistake!!??.

Here's where I have the "indagatio" folder uploaded to:-

You did it wrong way. You should have an option to manage nameservers / DNS for your domain name through which you need to change nameservers of your domain. Forwarding option will redirect your domain name to the default apache page of server and that wont work.

If you find it difficult to change the nameservers then open a ticket for me in sales department and let me know the login details of your 123-reg account. I will do the needful for you. You can open ticket from http://support.eukhost.com

You may feel somewhat uncomfortable right now but we are here to set you up for smooth hosting experience.

Thanks.

In the 123Reg control panel there is a "Manage DNS" section.

Contained within are the following options:-

Going by that, where do I add the DNS details for Eukhost?.

Many thanks, I was in the wrong section ( as you noticed.....LOL!! ).

Changed them over as per your most helpful screenshots and will try that.

Website is simply a template, I wanted to see if I could get to grips with the hosting before concentrating on starting the website.

Many thanks again for your impressive and prompt assistance.

Will let you know how I get on.

Gary.

Response time is just fine from where I am sitting!!!.

Anyway, I went back into the 123Reg control panel and reset the web forwarding settings I had changed back to no web forwarding.

Now its gone back to pointing at the 123Reg default page.

I think I would be better following your suggestion of a support ticket with my login details for 123Reg, then at least after you have taken a look and changed what needs done, I can see for myself.

Will forward a support ticket just now.

Gary.

Hello Gary,

Your domain name has started resolving from our server. I can see directory listing so you need to upload your contents inside the public_html directory from file manager. Your webpage will start showing as soon as the index page gets uploaded inside public_html directory.

The webpage is sat as per the picture previously posted, in a folder called "indagatio".

So I need to move that complete folder into the public_html directory in my cPanel?.

Is that where all uploaded websites need to be placed?. Sorry, I didnt realise that!!.

I have "parked" the domain name indagatio.co.uk in my cPanel, do I need to do that?.

Many thanks again,

Gary.

There's no way for the server to understand that you need some other directory as main directory.

Parken domain will point to the main accounts home directory so if you want it to resolve from internal directory then add the domain as addon domain and specify indagatio as the directory for it. Separate FTP account will also get setup with the username indagatio and your domain will show contents inside indagatio directory.

When typed into a browser its still taking me to:-

http:// 194.154.164.90/?domain=indagatio.co.uk 123Reg's website.

I had already reset my web forwarding in 123Reg back to "No web forwarding". I guess thats mucked things up?

I've set it up as a subdomain in cPanel, but to no avail.

God, I feel like a total PLANK!!!.

its coming out of cache of your machine or the ISP. You will need to wait till morning to have cache cleared.

I never opened your website when forwarding was enabled so there's no cache on my end and I can see your website resolving properly.

Here's a screenshot of what I see on your website.

Many thanks, apologies for not replying back sooner.

I think I have it sorted out now, up to a point. New placeholder website now uploaded and working fine.

I take it all of my uploaded websites need to be dropped into the "public_html" folder within my hosting in order to function correctly?.

I think thats where I was going wrong.

Many thanks again.

Gary.
