Default What is WSS ?

WSS [Windows SharePoint Services ]

Windows SharePoint Services is the Windows Server 2003 component that helps organizations increase individual and team productivity by enabling them to create Web sites for information sharing and document collaboration.

Sites based on Windows SharePoint Services, called SharePoint sites, take file storage to a new level, providing communities for team collaboration that make it possible for users to collaborate on documents, tasks, and events, and make it easier for them to share contacts and other information. Windows SharePoint Services enables managers of teams and sites to manage site content and user activity easily. The environment is designed for easier and more flexible deployment, administration, and application development.

Benefits for Users :

Windows SharePoint Services provides the following advantages to the individuals and teams who use it:

• Better Discoverability

Finding and accessing information across a distributed workplace is a major challenge for which Windows SharePoint Services offers an effective solution. By providing users with a single Web-based team environment and built-in search capabilities, Windows SharePoint Services helps users to find information more effectively than with traditional file shares.

• Better Communication

With the built-in alert capabilities of Windows SharePoint Services, users can be notified when changes are made to shared information. Microsoft Office Live Communication Server provides users with the means to communicate instantly, whether by video or audio, and Microsoft Office Live meeting enables users to communicate and collaborate with anyone.

• Better Team Processes

The process of document creation and review is made simpler and more effective with built-in document versioning plus check-in and check-out capabilities. Additionally, using Windows Rights Management Services, authors can determine how their documents are distributed and used by others.

• Better User Experience

By integrating Web-based team collaboration services into everyday tools such as Microsoft Office, users can quickly and effectively adopt new collaboration tools and services. And by providing Web-browser access, Windows SharePoint Services makes it easy for users to access team information through a single site on demand.

Hello Bart,

SharePoint service is a very useful application developed by Microsoft. Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) offering collaboration and document management functionality. You will get many other features in SharePoint services like Public folder, Forum discussion etc.

For SharePoint services we recommend a Dedicated server. You can consider one of our dedicated servers with minimum 4 GB RAM. You can also contact out sales department at any point of time for more information.

William - I'm currently doing a website for a large organisation that uses ShatePoint for their internal intranet. I believe that it can provide xml data that can be picked up and displayed on a public website.

My problem is that I'm trying to get the data into PHP on a linux server and am running into major difficulties trying to get the data. Do you have any experiance of this, or perhaps point me in the right direction

TIA
David

Hi David, is this related with Help with asp where you tried fetching data from/to an ASP file?

Hi Jack
Yes it is - I was trying to use an asp solution to get the XML data which I could then get into php on the linux server.

Managed to get the asp file to extract the data - but only if the file was sitting on an authenticated server - and then it wouldn't pass it over to my server and php.
So I thought maybe someone knew of a direct way to get the data
