Default 1 host, 2 domains... yikes. Help!

Hello all,

I have recentlty paid for the copper plan with eukhost.com, and now have some hosting space and a domain name. I would like to host a second domain on my eukspace.com space that I have purchased elsewhere.

The domain I own and is hosted on eukhost.com is www.twostepalgae.net, and the domain I own but want to point to space on eukhost.com is www.snerpton.net.

What I Would Like To Do

I would like to host www.snerpton.net on some space on eukhost www.twostepalgae.net, and would like this to be transparent to the user.

The Plan

I believe I need to do the following:

1) Change the name servers of snerpton.net, such that new ones are the servers of eukhost.com.
2) Create an add-on domain for snerpton.net on eukhost twostepalgae.net, which creates the subdomain snerpton.twostepalgae.net
3) Create an alias for snerpton.net on eukhost. to point to snerpton.twostepalgae.net

What I Have Done

I have done 1), as can be verified at dnsstuff.com. The output for snerpton.net:

Domain servers in listed order:
NS6.EUKHOST.NET 64.38.20.134
NS7.EUKHOST.NET 64.38.21.42

so I believe I have successfully changed the name servers.

I believe I have also done 2). In cPanel I added an add-on domain and the "add-on domain" pane now shows "Current Addon Domains snerpton.net (snerpton) [redirect]". On the same pane it says "snerpton.net is now being redirected to http://www.twostepalgae.net/snerpton//" This seems to have had the effect of creating a subdomain called snerpton.twostepalgae.net. This is supported by when I go to the address snerpton.twostepalgae.net, it redirects me to twostepalgae.net/snerpton.

The Problem

When I go to www.snerpton.net, I just get the place holder of the company that I registered the domain with (123-reg.co.uk). I believe I now need to create an alias for snerpton.net on eukhost.

The Questions

1) Is this the correct method to host a second domain?
2) If so, how do I go about creating an alias?

I'm rather new to all this web hosting etc. so any help would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Chris Ashton

PS I realize it takes up 48 hours for these changes to proliferate. However I made these changes about 24 hours ago and dnsstuff.com has recognized the changes I have made, so I presume I'm not falling foul of this.

Hello Chris,

You have setup a redirect for snerpton.net which is not nedded if you want snerpton.net to have its own webpage and separate conents. You should remove the redirect from your control panel to see separate website for http:// snerpton.net.

If you have the intention to use snerpton.net to redirect to a subdomain of twostepalgae.net then keep the redirect as it is and change the index page thats inside public_html/snerpton. Once you change the index page then you will be able to see your index page that you upload.

You can replace the index page from file manager in your control panel as well as FTP. We have good tutorials for using file manager as well as different FTP softwares in our support section located at http://www.eukhost.com/support/

Please go through the tutorials and let me know if you face any problem in proceeding.

Hi Mark,

thanks for the prompt reply. I've had a read of the tutorials but I can't quite find what I'm after... or maybe I'm missing something! I have uploaded some content via ftp, so that is all fine.

I believe I would like to do what you outline in your first paragraph, but I'll be pedantic and explain again - this web mastering is new to me, and I want to confirm that I'm not misleading you with incorrect terminology.

I presume you have access to my account, but if not, my directory structure looks something like what is shown below:

[d]public_html
====index.html (entry point for twostepalgae.net)
====[d]content
========files_for_twostepalgae.net

====[d]snerpton
========index.html (my temporary place holder)
========index.php (future entry point for snerpton.net)
========other_files
========[d]content_dirs
============files_forsnerpton.net

other_files

[d]other_dir

The twostepalgae.net part works fine, as in, I enter http://www.twostepalgae.net into my browser and it goes to my twostepalgae.net place holder public_html/index.html.

What I would like to do, is enter http://www.snerpton.net into my browser and it go to my snerpton.net place holder public_html/snerpton/index.html. I would like to have the following features:

1) twostepalgae.net and snerpton.net to be two separate web websites with separate content (although the content for both websites will be stored on my twostepalgae.net ukhost space).

2) When a user goes to http://www.snerpton.net/someDir/somePage.html the browser should show http://www.snerpton.net/someDir/somePage.html, rather than http://www.twostepalgae.net/snerpton/someDir/somePage.html.

I believed "addon domains" to be the way to go about this, and whilst setting up the addon domain snerpton.net, the addon cPanel pane created the subdomain snerpton.twostepalgae.net and its associated directory.

Following your advice in paragraph 1 of your reply, I have removed all redirection for snerpton.net from my control panel. When I say this I mean I have checked in the following places:

1) Addon Domain Maintenance: still shows that my current addon domains are snerpton.net, but that there is no redirection (or at least it says snerpton.net is now being redirected to http://).

2) Sub Domain Maintenance: shows that snerpton.twostepalgae.net is currently being redirected to http:// and I have pushed the remove redirection button for this subdomain.

I changed my DNS for snerpton.net yesterday to the eukhost name servers, and so I presume any changes I make to redirection should happen fairly quickly. When I enter http://www.snerpton.net into my browser, it still goes to http://194.154.164.90/?domain=snerpton.net, the place holder 123-reg.co.uk provided.

Without any redirect, how does the ukhost servers know to send any requests for snerpton.net to the appropriate part of my directory structure - I presume I'm still missing something rather obvious! Any help would be again very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Chris

PS I've just noticed, that if I enter the url http://www.snerpton.net./ (link in your reply) in to my browser, everything works as I would like and expect. The critical thing is the extra "." after ".net". How do I get rid of the extra "."? If I can do that, everything is perfect!

Hello Chris,

Take a look at www. snerpton.net and that should solve your problem. I've modified the index.html page inside /home/twostep/public_html/snerpton/ and this has updated the index page of www. snerpton.net

Please let me know if there's any other confusion left on your end. Last 3 hours have given you good knowledge of the control panel and functions of cpanel
