Domain or Database ?

Hi all,
It's the village idiot back again trying to make sense of this new venture he's undertaken . . .

Can some kind soul explain the difference between a Domain and Database in terms of which should be used for a web address ?
For example, could I have a database called vidiot.net ?
Am I right in thinking [how it hurts . . .] that a database is really just for php applications and a domain better for html ?

I would also like to change my "Homepage" [index.php] to one I've designed myself, however is it possible to replace a php with an html ? [I know both are used in conjunction usually but when it's a particular page what then ?]

I think things are a little mixed up here. Databases and Domains are two very different things. I think some proper definitions from dictionary.com could clear this up better than I could:

Database

A collection of data arranged for ease 
and speed of search and retrieval. Also called data bank.

Domain

In the Internet, a part of a naming hierarchy consisting of 
a sequence of names separated by periods (dots) that corresponds 
to the network number ...

... so a domain is an internet address while a database is a collection of data, in it's simplest form a database can be thought of as much like a spreadsheet.

You shouldn't have any problems using index.html rather than index.php but generally speaking you can create a file that contains only HTML and still call it index.php on most servers.

Domain name act as identity for your site which is registered by domain register like 123 register or 1& 1.

Where as database can work as a data bank for your site. Databse can be stored with the help of My SQL, MS SQL, MS Access etc

Thanks to both of you for your help, as I keep on saying it's this standard of care and attention that has made me a eukHost fan.
I see what you both say and I can see why now, I was just confused, surely a website is a database of sorts, being a collection of code ? [just thinking out loud . . .]
It puzzles me that if a domain and database are 2 seperate things why it's possible to replace an index.html with an index.php ?
On that note, I shall depart . . .

Hello Jon,

Database is completely different from Domain and Database has nothing to do with html or php. html or php or perl or asp.net are various sources to get connected to a database but database is not dependent on any of the languages or scripts.

Scripting languages are your source to connect to a Database. You can use index.php or index.html as your homepage and its not necessary at all to setup a database to design your website in php. You can visit www.w3schools.com to learn more about html, php & mysql.
