Default Portal page ?

Hi All,
Following a chat with a eukhost rep I have been directed back here for further help.

When I go to my home address [wysifa.net] from my browser I am met with a eukhost page that contains links and informs me that if I wish to change the page I must delete the index.php file and replace it with my own index.html/php file.

No problem, I understand that but . . .
How do I make another page to replace it. Is there a special programme or any software on the CP that can do this for me please ?
It would be nice to be able to have a page with some links to other areas on my site, maybe a nice picture/flash banner and /or a blog.

If I wish to change my main password exactly which CP option should I use ? I'm a bit confused because there are quite a few to choose from.

Many thanks in anticipation !
Jon

I assume you are using the latest cPanel with the x3 skin (you will be if your on shared hosting here). To change your password go to the Preferences section at the top of cPanel and click the "Change Password" option to change your main password.

You can use software such as Dreamweaver, Expression Web, Frontpage, Word or even Notepad to create a .htm or .php file. Frontpage isn't the best software in the world but normally the easiest for beginners.

If you just want to type in the code you can create a new .htm or .php file through file manager and save it over the original index file there.

Hope that helps . If you have any more questions feel free to post again and I will try to answer them as well as possible!

Is there a reason why you chose to buy web hosting in the first place? Do you have a website you wish to load into the space?
If you have a site waiting to be uploaded then do so via ftp (filezilla is a great free ftp client) using the FTP login details supplied by eukhost.
Otherwise, learn some basic html and create your own index.html page and replace the existing one - again via ftp.
There is a decent open source (that essentially means free) program for helping you create web pages, http://www.nvu.com/ this is worth a try given that Dreamweaver and the like costs several hundreds of pounds.

Everyone has to go through this stage and even you and me have been through it.

Best option for you right now would be to use some sort of site builder program to make your website and publish your design on your hosting account. You can also consider some sort of blog or CMS to get started. Try and install wordpress blog from Fantastico section of your control panel and step by step try customizing it. You will have tough time to go through it initially but you have no choice if you wish to learn things. If you want to pay someone to make your website then start a new thread in "designing and Development" forum and one of our customers will help you with designing of your website.

Another note is that if you have bought office in the past then you most likely have a version of Frontpage already. Don't forget there is also free trials of commercial softaware as well .

Default NVU/KompoZer

Hi All,
Many thanks to you for your answers which as usual have helped me out !

Funny you mention Nvu . . . I'm an ex-mod from the old Nvu forum who started up a new place when it was closed down.
I'm running an Nvu/KompoZer forum at the moment [see my signature] but am with a free host. I've now over 600 members and expect a lot more but the free host are having major problems which is why I'm moving my forum to eukhost.
So . . . Now I know I can use either of them for my page consider it done !
I thought there might have been a specialised app that had to be used so wanted to check first.
You might like to know that KompoZer, which is a bug-fix for Nvu has recently been updated to 7.10. More details are available from my forum strangely enough . . .

Once again big thanks, you've saved me a lot of trouble !
Jon
